Oregon Man Missing After Going on Hike in Tehama Co.

David Ura, 63, was dropped off by his wife and daughter at the Ides Cove trailhead in far western Tehama county on June 15.

Ura set off alone with the family dog, but the plan was to meet his children in Hayfork six days later with supplies, but he didn’t show up.

Friends from his hometown of Medford are organizing a search.

If anyone has information into Ura’s whereabouts call the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office.

I am always so grateful to hear of the good people who help out with search and rescue. Combined with the information from WS there are so many positive forces to locate the missing.

Adding my positive energy to this search. I'm an avid hiker and the dog thing, well, yeah, I hope they are both safe and show up soon. Lots of possibilities with good endings here.

MISSING: Central Point man, dog hiking in Calif. did not meet family at checkpoint
The following information has been released by the Tehama County Sheriff's Office: "64yr old David Ura from Central Point, Oregon, was dropped off at the Ides Cove Trailhead west of Red Bluff on 6/15/18 by his daughter. He began an over 70 mile trek on a newer trail called the Bigfoot Trail. Mr. Ura took this hike accompanied only by his dog.
The Bigfoot Trail begins in the rural area of Tehama County near the Trinity County Border with his final destination being Hayfork in Trinity County. He planned for the hike to be 5 days and packed provisions to accommodate the trip. He did not take a personal locater but did have a cell phone to call his daughter once reaching his destination. The cell phone has not been activated since he left.

As of Tuesday, an air and ground search had failed to locate a missing hiker on the remote Bigfoot Trail between the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness and Hayfork.

Staff from the Tehama and Trinity County sheriff’s offices aren’t familiar with the Bigfoot Trail which includes backcountry trails as well as areas that haven’t been maintained and U.S. Forest Service roads. Volunteers familiar with the area have been searching along the trail while Forest Service employees have driven the main roads in the area. “It’s actually a very long trail.”

That trail is new in some areas, convoluted with parts of it being trail and parts of it being forest service roads. Also, a number of sections have had no maintenance and would make timely hiking very difficult. Parts of it would be more bushwhacking than hiking according to people that had traveled on it. Hikers that have tried it have reported more bears than people and there is more than a small amount of illegal marijuana growing adding a criminal element. I pray they find him and his dog today as temps climb above 100 F. in the Valley. More info on the trail: The mystic Bigfoot Trail

Stepping up the prayers tonight. It was reported the hiker is diabetic. His doctor apparently approved the hike, but if he's insulin dependent and it's five day past getting new supplies that's not good.

Search continues for missing hiker on Big Foot Trail - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

Right now the current search area is about 144 square miles.

A neighbor said: “He has checkpoints all along the way, and I thought he had GPS or something like that, he goes equipped” he said. Ura works at R.E.I., and the neighbor says he’s an active guy, going on long distance hikes at least once a year with his dog.

The family said he had simply maps and a compass, no mention of GPS. I'm not sure how good the "maps" would be. Bigfoot is a "concept" trail meant as general guidance for navigating the area. In many areas there is no trail at all, you're bushwhacking. Let's hope the searchers stick together.

I hope there will be some follow-up information about what happened during the days they were missing. That could be very important to know for future missing hikers cases.:)

I'm so glad to see this news. Kudos to the daughter and those who searched.
I sort of avoided this thread,.....when there's a dog involved, it just makes it worse....
David Ura seems like a wonderful man.
