Yu’s husband began to notice a strange taste in his tea that he drank daily, and eventually set up a secret camera system in the family’s kitchen as part of his own investigation. Three days in July 2022 Yu was captured on camera pouring liquid drain cleaner into husband Jack Chen’s tea that was left on the counter, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

Chen, a radiologist, then scooped up samples of the tea and gave them over to Irvine police that were later given to the FBI, confirming the substance was the liquid cleaner.

The husband suffered from stomach ulcers as a result of the alleged poisoning, the district attorney’s office said.

He has since filed for divorce and is fighting for full custody of their children.

Yu is scheduled to be arraigned on April 18. Her attorney, Scott Simmons, said she will plead not guilty.

Sorry, not buying it. A liquid solution of borax is widely available in bait stations by all the major insecticide brands that's cheap, safe and totally effective, I've used it. Borax - Wikipedia
Nice try, doc.

Arraignment was postponed until May 18, now coming up. Also some details about their custody battle, from an April article:
Yu appeared in court Tuesday, but her arraignment was postponed until May 18 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Yu and her estranged husband, Dr. Jack Chen, have been embroiled in a child custody dispute since last year. She has been granted visitation, but recently filed to have Chen pay support to her, claiming she has been unable to work since the poisoning allegations surfaced.

Yu was requesting $9,971 monthly spousal support and $50,000 for attorneys fees, according to court records. The two were married for 10 years and one month. Yu said Chen earns $44,153 monthly plus $10,811 from another income source.

Yu has been granted eight hours a week to spend with their two children. She said she and her mother were ordered out of the residence and that she had to liquidate her assets to care for her 75-year-old mother and cover their living expenses. She estimated her monthly expenses are $16,837 and said she is on unpaid leave from her practice.

Dr. Yue “Emily” Yu’s 11-year-old daughter, appearing to be distressed and tearful, told her school counselor in a private session last November that she feared if she didn’t lie about what happened, she would make her mom angry, the therapist wrote in court documents.

When the therapist asked why, the girl said, “Because what if she does what she did to my dad to me?”

The counselor then asked, “Are you afraid that your mom would kill you?”

“Yes,” the girl replied, according to court documents.

The allegations surfaced as Yu and her husband, Dr. Jack Chen, are in the middle of a divorce and custody battle.

Yu’s lawyer, David Dworakowski, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime. But in court documents, he and his co-counsel said Yu “categorically denies having any violative communications with the children, much less coaching them about facts related to her defense in the criminal matter.”

Yu lost in-person visitation rights with their children late last year, after her daughter told a school therapist that she was afraid her mother would poison her as well and that Yu had coached her to say she wanted to be with her mother “24-7,” according to a recently published statement by the therapist.

[...]

The 10-year-old daughter said that her mother would beat her with the leg of a chair and that her maternal grandmother would do the same, chasing the children around the house to hit them with it, according to the statement by therapist Patricia Ramsey.

Yu also coached the children, telling them to lie about why the family had Drano in the house. She instructed them to say was because there was an ant infestation and Chen had refused to get ant traps, according to the statement.

The coaching occurred during scheduled visits with monitors, but Yu took steps to instruct the children while the monitors were not paying attention, according to the therapist’s statement.
