SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose police (SJPD) are asking for help to track down the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash involving a grandmother and her toddler grandson.

This happened Tuesday at about 5:40 p.m. at Sierra Road and Mauna Kea Lane.

The pair's daily walk took a dangerous turn. Surveillance footage captured the moment a driver hit the 68-year-old woman and launched her from the marked crosswalk, into the intersection.

The toddler, who was strapped into his stroller, landed face down.

The driver of the dark gray four-door hatchback did not stop

According to the boy's mother, grandma had a CT scan. The family learned she also suffered broken ribs and shoulders, and she was later admitted into the hospital.

The boy is okay. He suffered a bump and a scratch. Although his mother shared, "For my son, because he cannot express exactly how he's feeling, we don't know emotionally how much of an impact is for him."

I'm not sure if it's the video quality/speed but the timing seems very odd. I need to check on speed limit there because I'm curious if the car was speeding? I'm wondering if the car had time to stop? There's no excuse for not stopping after striking the woman and her grandchild, so I hope they are found to face justice. I don't know that area but in my mind depending on various factors etc, the car may have not have had time to stop. The cars parked along the road could have made it harder to see them. I tend to slow down when I come to major crossings like this but I don't even know if there's a speed law requirement? Regardless, they fled and that was horrible.

Edited for typos

After she entered the intersection pushing the stroller, the grandma started running. Why? Did she realize the car was coming too fast to stop? She had activated the pedestrian warning light (there was no traffic light), so the driver should have seen that she had the right-of-way. We have those warning lights on the main drag that runs through our town, so pedestrians can cross where there are no traffic lights. The speed limit is 30 mph. I will confess that when they were first installed (after a fatality) I had to really focus to make sure I noticed them until I got in the habit. But had I hit someone, there is no way I would speed off. Who does that?!

I feel like this car was going much faster than 30, but I could be wrong. She did have the right of way. I wonder if she thought the car was further away? It looks like she runs from the start. Definitely should have stopped, scared or not. Had they stopped, it might have been a situation where both were at fault? Now they've dug a much deeper hole and traumatized the grandmother. Very sad. Glad the baby had such minor injuries.

Unbelievable.

That car had plenty of room on either side of the street, apparently no attempt to avoid ramming the woman & child.

Hate crime?

Or just entitled idiocy?

Wonder if the driver has a criminal record, is out on bail from other crimes....

Yes the car seemed to be going much faster than 30 mph. It seemed like that street was downhill and I don’t know what the speed limit is on that street. I was referring to the boulevard in my town with pedestrian warning lights.

I agree with laughing that there was plenty of room to avoid hitting the grandma and stroller. I wonder if the driver was “multi-tasking” while driving and didn’t see them. If not, it looks deliberate.

I do think the grandma may have been able to do more to protect herself. She pushes the button then immediately goes into the street, even appearing to run. The video quality is low, but I don’t see her looking to check for cars. I see this behavior from folks of all ages. Yes, pedestrians have the right of way, but cars are going to win in a collision.

The driver could have possibly avoided a felony if they stopped and helped. They may have been able to say the flashing lights hadn’t even engaged and the grandma just suddenly ran in front of them. But all humanity is lost if you leave these poor people on the street without helping them.

Yes, we see this inattention with pedestrians all.the.time in our town. It’s stressful driving through town. As a child I was taught never to run when crossing a street...what if you fall! I lost a dear, dear friend about 18 months ago, killed crossing a street near their home in WA. Apparently, her husband saw a car in the distance and miscalculated its speed. She died in the helicopter en route to the hospital. :( As you say, the car will always win. This grandma and the toddler could have been killed. I’m so glad they weren’t, but I hope LE addresses this with her. The driver, on the other hand, showed such callous disregard for human life no matter what the mitigating circumstances that may have contributed to hitting the grandma and child. Your comment “all humanity is lost” is exactly right.

She technically had the right-of-way as a pedestrian, so I don’t think she would be considered legally at fault and cited. But in terms of being careless, yes, there is fault on her part. I also think the car was coming too fast, so even if the driver had stopped to render aid, they probably would have been cited.

It looks like she ran into the crosswalk from the sidewalk, her action in the video looked so odd? Horrifying and I'm grateful they are both alive, but I don't think the car actually saw her and had a chance to even react.

Obviously they should have stopped and rendered aid.

in san jose, the pedestrian at the lighted crossings has the right of way. its been so bad here w pedestrian fatalities that there are undercover cops doing stings at these crosses.

a child was killed and his babysitter injured last month i believe here in san jose, crossing in a crosswalk in a school zone. an SJSU football player also was killed like 2 weeks ago when he smacked into a bus turning left on an escooter.
