Teen accused of killing his mom escapes California jail

Dozens of law enforcement personnel were searching Friday for a 15-year-old boy who was in the middle of a murder trial in the killing of his mother when he escaped a Southern California jail.

Ike Souzer escaped the Orange County Juvenile Hall and jumped a perimeter fence just after midnight, said sheriff’s Capt. Mike Peters.

The 6-foot-tall, 200-pound teen was wearing red pants and a white shirt and may have an injured leg, Peters said, adding that surveillance footage showed Souzer tending to an apparent wound after his escape.

Peters said about 60 law enforcement officials were searching for Souzer. He said there’s no evidence that Souzer was armed but urged the public to call 911 if they think they’ve spotted him.

Souzer has been in custody since he was 13, when he was arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his mother, 48-year-old Barbra Scheuer-Souzer. His escape came in the middle of Souzer’s trial, said Kimberly Edds, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.

Steve Sentman, chief probation officer for the county, declined to release too many details about the escape, citing security reasons, but said that Souzer somehow got out of a locked room before he was able to scale the jail’s perimeter fence.

Unbelievable.

The blue headlines are a bit confusing! I had to read it twice to figure it out.

It appears this kid fatally stabbed his mom to death when he was 13. He has been in custody since then. Now is the trial which he has escaped from. Right.

Has anyone read what he was angry about to stab his mom to death?

A teenage murder suspect who had escaped from a juvenile hall in Orange County was recaptured by sheriff’s deputies late Friday, officials said.

Ike Souzer, 15, was arrested without incident by members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department inside a McDonald’s near Euclid Street and Glenoaks Avenue in Anaheim about 9 p.m., according to Carrie Braun, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.

Souzer had been in custody since May 2017 when authorities say he fatally stabbed his mother, Barbara Scheuer-Souzer, 48, in Garden Grove. The boy, who was 13 at the time, repeatedly stabbed the woman, then left her on the ground in front of their home in the 11000 block of Gilbert Street, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said.

Whitney said that when police found her, Scheuer-Souzer had stab wounds in her abdomen but was alive and identified her son as her attacker. She died hours later at a hospital.

Detectives arrested the boy in a parking lot about a half-mile away, and he showed officers where he buried the knife used in the killing, Whitney said.

Authorities were familiar with the teen before the fatal stabbing. Police had searched for Souzer three weeks earlier when he ran away from home.

Souzer’s family shared his photo on Facebook at the time in an effort to find him and suggested that he might have gone to a bike or skate park. They wrote that the boy was not violent. He was found in Pomona days later.

The teen, who Whitney said has autism but is high-functioning, was in court this week for his criminal trial. The trial was expected to wrap up in the next several days.

“That could be why this happened now,” Whitney said.

This is local to me and has been all over the radio and tv news. Today on car radio I heard a synopsis from someone who knew the family:

He had run away from home a couple of times at 13. One time he was gone for a few days and his Mom was actively searching for him. The police found him and brought him home.

She said he was angry about being brought home because he didn't like the family rules and wanted no curfew and so he was mad. But this man, and I didn't catch who he was to the family, said no one expected him to lash out violently.

In true crime oddities, the 11000 Gilbert St. block is 1.8 miles from 12551 Ocean Breeze Dr. where Cinnamon Brown murdered her stepmother Linda Baily Brown in 1985. (Ann Rule, If You Really Loved Me). That was 32 years ago.

Garden Grove Teen Accused of Killing His Mother Was Placed on House Arrest Prior to Fatal Stabbing: Report

"... “In my 25 years of doing this job, I haven’t handled a call where a child has killed a parent,” Garden Grove Lt. Carl Whitney told the Register. “Usually, it’s the other way around. People don’t think of kids having those types of thoughts of doing something so heinous.” ..."
