Petaluma Police Announce New Leads In 1997 Disappearance Of Janie June Coe

December 17, 2021 - PETALUMA (BCN) — Police in Petaluma are following up on new leads generated by DNA evidence collected after a woman went missing in 1997.

New DNA evidence was discovered in some of the evidence that had been collected during the initial investigation into the disappearance of Janie June Coe, according a news release issued Thursday by the Petaluma Police Department.

Police said Coe was last seen on April 29, 1997, when she had returned to her eastside Petaluma home after a job interview.

When she did not pick up her children from a family member on May 2, 1997, she was reported as a missing person to the Petaluma Police Department.

The initial investigation revealed that her ATM Card had been used on April 29, 1997, at the West America Bank in Petaluma.

Investigators obtained bank surveillance video of an unidentified female using her ATM card and driving a 1978-1982 Ford Mustang. Due to the poor quality of the video footage, Investigators were unable to determine the vehicle’s license plate.

On May 5, 1997, Janie’s 1989 Ford Aerostar van was found abandoned adjacent to an open field in Napa. Police said that since her disappearance, neither her children, other family members nor friends have heard from her.

If anyone has any new information about this case, they are encouraged to contact Detective Corie Joerger at (707) 778-4456.

New DNA evidence could help solve 24-year-old cold case involving a mom of three, 38, who vanished | Daily Mail Online

The Petaluma Police press release include an image of what Coe might look like now at the age of 63

''She was said to be the kind of person who 'did not like to venture far from home.' Napa, where the car was found, is about 35 miles from Petaluma.

About three hours after Coe was last seen, a woman driving a Ford Mustang used her ATM card at a bank in Petaluma.

Video surveillance caught the transaction but it was of poor quality and you couldn't make out the woman's face or the license plate of the car.

Police have not given any details about the nature of the evidence or where they got it from, but they deemed it important enough to put out a bulletin calling for more information from anyone who had it. ''

Details of disappearance updated.

Janie June Coe – The Charley Project
Details of Disappearance
Coe was last seen in Petaluma, California on April 29, 1997. She had some job training that day and, after finishing, returned to her home on Penrod Drive at 3:00 p.m. She has never been heard from again.

Coe left behind all her belongings, including her eyeglasses and one of her contact lenses; she would have needed them to see well enough to drive. Her three children were visiting a relative at the time of her disappearance; she was reported missing when she didn't pick them up as expected.

Just three hours after Coe was last seen, an unidentified heavyset woman driving a 1978 to 1982 Ford Mustang used Coe's ATM card at a West America Bank in Petaluma. The woman withdrew $20 using the card.

Although the bank's surveillance cameras captured images of the car, the video was too poor quality to either identify the driver or read the license plate number on the vehicle. Coe had been known to lend her ATM card to friends and it's possible that's what happened in this case, but police would like to identify and question the person who used it.

On May 5, Coe's two-tone blue 1989 Aerostar van was found in Napa, California. She has friends in Napa, but they denied having heard from her since her disappearance. The vehicle was not located near any public transportation and Coe's husband stated it is uncharacteristic of her to go so far from home. A photo of it is posted with this case summary.

Coe lost her job as the administrator of a retirement home prior to her disappearance and had taken another job at a cosmetics company. Her friends stated she was in a good mood and was looking forward to beginning her new job. Her case remains unsolved.

I have the impression that this woman was kidnapped somewhere before going to work and that she was also depressed or maybe she took the path of the brave and committed suicide... it shows that she was a good person, a good woman... The one who is withdrawing money from the ATM must be someone who recently or directly knew his kidnapper...
Whatever she is, rest in peace.
