Miguel Loza, who fled to Mexico after being suspected of a brutal slaying in Santa Cruz two years ago, has been released from jail in that country and may be heading back to the Santa Cruz area, officials said Wednesday.

A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest, officials said.

Loza, 29, is charged with raping and stabbing 17-year-old Jessica Sheridan in a vacant preschool near Cabrillo College. As she lay bleeding from a knife wound in her neck, he sexually assaulted another young woman, officials said. He also urinated on Sheridan.

The assaults took place in February 2003. Sheridan lingered in a coma until August of that year, when she died in a long-term care facility.

Loza was a transient, camping in the mountains. He was born in Mexico but raised in Santa Cruz County and has family in Watsonville.

Loza was arrested twice in Mexico, for robbing and stabbing a man in March 2004 and, last September, on charges of abducting and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. He spent a month in jail in the first case, according to sheriff's detective Henry Montes, and five months in jail in the Mexico City area for the second. He was released in February after the girl refused to press charges.
