I used to live in the adjoining county and knew people where his car is rumored to have been found. I always called it “the back of the beyond.” It’s very remote, about 250 miles from Sacto. There is no reason for him to go that way to get to WA state unless he was trying to get over from I-5 to 101 and take the coast route. It appears he took a wrong turn south off Hiway 36 to get where the car was found. I really hope he’s OK.

The family has arrived in the Zenia area and is searching. His daughter said that he took 101 to get away from I-5, but no one knows how he got to Zenia-Kettenpom area. Keith is not steady on his feet. They’ve connected with Dianna Totten a SAR person who helped in the Sherri Papini search. The car has bullet holes but all his possessions are there so it may be the usual target practice thing. His daughter is posting in the comments and lots of suggestions being made, which is a wonderful thing about SoHum residents. Here’s hoping for Keith’s safety.

I’m so sorry. Condolences to his loving family and kudos to the hard work and systematic reasoning ability of Diana Totten and her SAR crew. After obtaining a profile of Keith (including mild dementia) from his family and confirming that he had come through Covelo to get where his car was found...

Eventually, they decided their next step was to search again around the area Olsen’s car had been located.

While at the location Olsen’s car had been discovered, the profile the family had helped provide the searchers helped them narrow down the search area. Totten said, “Within about 500 feet south of where the car had been, there was a cattle guard across the road. They are hard to cross by foot even on a good day, so knowing Keith had trouble walking and sometimes used a walker and most often used a cane, and realizing it was dark and storming the night he got to this location, it was unlikely he would have been able to get across without some difficulty.”

The cattle guard provided “a bit of boundary on the search area for us,” Totten explained. “We were then able to locate his tracks and we then were able to find his body.”

Covelo itself is isolated, not a place you happen upon. I was there in the spring about 35 years ago. The mountains still had snow, and the valley was covered in orange California poppies and purple lupine. A sight to behold.

Keith would have taken 162 (a narrow country road) off 101 for some reason in order to get there and then continued on even more winding roads to end up where he and his car were found. If you go on google earth and fly over the area you can get an idea of how wild the area is. Had his car not been found, finding Keith would have taken even longer. I’m so sorry his misadventure in this beautiful wild country ended this way. But I’m glad he was found.
