I recreated the map drawn by Investigator Kennedy back in ‘96. The arrow represents where Paul told police he last saw #KristinSmart …near the driveway of the Sequoia Red Brick Hall, before peeling off to go to his dorm (Santa Lucia) to the left. Kristin lived in Muir

Sanger asks retiree investigator Kennedy if he ever investigated other potential suspects such as a Brian Sawicki who was a sheriffs community officer who reportedly saw #kristinsmart at a party the night before and also took part in searches for KS after disappearance

That person, Alyssa, described Smart as “carefree, outgoing, spontaneous and boy-crazy.” Said Smart would disappear at nights and return in the morning. Said Smart was “totally capable of hiding money and leaving on her own,” according to a reading of the report.

That Alyssa reportedly said Smart followed a male counselor she liked to another island, where she spent $175 on a hotel (in 1995) and bought him a gold ring. This will undoubtedly be a big piece of the defense’s case

FINAL NOTES: 1. The court is going to unseal some documents related to search warrants 2. court is also preparing for the prelim to take all month 3. Cross-examination of Alyssa's testimony was in compliance with the judge's ruling on the scope.

Also, this hearing’s running behind. We now expect this hearing to last the rest of the month. My vacation is pushed back yet again.

The judge just unsealed a defense motion to suppress evidence, which supposedly contains information that investigators submitted to the court to support search warrants in the case. We’ll report what they contain once we get them.

But friend of Paul’s, Javier Carrillo, tells Kennedy when Carrillo asks Paul about KS's current whereabouts after she disappeared, Paul tells Carrillo "she's home with my parents,” according to Kennedy. Sanger tries to argue later that this may have been in a “joking” context.

And now about these unsealed motions...

On top of dozens of wiretaps they put on Paul, Ruben and Susan's phones between 1996 and 2019, looks like investigators put several GPS tracking devices on PF's Impala in San Pedro beginning in Jan. 2020.

Still Missing - CA - Kristin Smart, 19, San Luis Obispo, 25 May 1996 *arrests* #2
8/4/21 Wednesday, Day 3 of Preliminary hearing: State witnesses: San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Detective Clint Cole continued testimony. Retired Cal Poly police investigator Lawrence Kennedy-Served as an investigator from 1985-2003. He first interviewed Paul on 5/28/96 & then interviewed him again two days later (5/30/96), Kennedy called Paul in for a voluntary interview (45 minutes long), which was recorded & played in court Wednesday.
The attorneys & judge had a 20 minute closed chambers discussion about the cross-examination of Det. Kennedy regarding a statement he got from a person named Alyssa who was a friend of Kristin's in Hawaii. Judge van Rooyen went on the record after the cross-examination to clarify what happened in chambers. Van Rooyen said he addressed the People's objection to relevance & overruled it on the basis that the defense would limit the scope of the questions. The prosecution found the original notes taken by Investigator Kennedy during the early days of the case which had not yet been discovered. They will be submitted to evidence & Kennedy will take the stand again Thursday morning.
1. The court is going to unseal some documents related to search warrants 2. Court is also preparing for the preliminary hearings to take all month 3. Cross-examination of Alyssa's testimony was in compliance with the judge's ruling on the scope. The judge unsealed a defense motion to suppress evidence, which supposedly contains information that investigators submitted to the court to support search warrants in the case. Preliminary hearing continues on 8/5/21. No court on Fridays.

DAY 4 Flores Prelim: Defense asks for better filing of 500+ original notes from Cal Poly Det. Kennedy from the early days of the case. DDA says they are working on it but fairly difficult given the length of the case. Det. Kennedy is back on the stand for cross-examination.

Testimony continues this morning in the #KristinSmart preliminary hearing, where Paul Flores' defense is questioning the retired Cal Poly investigator about leads he didn't follow up on with other men they say should have been looked into.

Margarita Campos, who lived next door to #kristinsmart in Muir Hall, takes the witness stand. She is describing her night out with Kristin before they separated “I’ve replayed in my head, over and over like ‘why did I let her go by herself?’” She said.

Witness testimony resumed Thursday in San Luis Obispo Superior Court for the preliminary hearing in the case of Smart, who prosecutors say was murdered by Paul Flores during a rape attempt more than 25 years ago.

Paul Flores, 44, is the last person to see the 19-year-old Smart alive after walking her back from the party toward the Cal Poly campus residence halls on May 24, 1996. He is accused of raping or attempting to rape Smart in his dorm room before killing her. .....

Thursday marked the fourth day of testimony in an evidentiary hearing for Paul and Ruben Flores that was expected to last at least 12 days before the judge in the case said Wednesday it’s likely to proceed through August.

So far, the prosecution has laid out its case against the father-and-son co-defendants in a mostly linear fashion.
