Lula Mae Glascoe Nelson (1920-1940) - Find A...

Lula was the daughter of Roseva Harding Glascoe and Donald Leslie Glascoe Sr. She had siblings June Preston, Loraine Cobley, Donald Glascoe Jr. and Lloyd Glascoe. Lula had two children, Eddie Glascoe born when she was a teenager and Lorene Nelson. Lula married Melious Nelson and he was the father of Lorene. In about 1940 Lula left her son Eddie with a friend and went to get her paycheck. She traveled by public transportation to Wilmington, CA. from Long Beach, CA. probably not more than ten miles and was never seen again. Her daughter Lorene was with her father Nelson who was separated from Lula at the time. Her disappearance was reported to the police but they never found her or what happened to her. Her son Eddie was turned over to the L.A. County Child Welfare Dept. and was adopted before the family could claim him. We have never been able to trace what happened to him and have found no records on him at all through L.A. County. When someone disappears in a family it leaves a hole that is never filled but always thought about and wondered about by those who come later. Lula's daughter will always have questions about what happened to her mother and brother and even though we have tried to find the answers we have accepted that we may never know what happened./QUOTE]

Found Lula Mae while searching for missing persons that could match early Jane Does. This is such a tragic story too.

She did strike me as similar to Los Angeles County Jane Doe (who I could not find a thread for).

I am in two minds about the husband, Melius Burnice Nelson, who died in 1991. There are several posts on Ancestry in 2000 from the daughter Lorene, who was looking for both her half brother and her father (who had died by the time of the posts). This indicates to me that, whilst she may have been with the father when Lula Mae went missing, he did not raise her. This is reinforced by a reply to one post from Lorene. A daughter of a subsequent marriage of Melius replied and clearly did not know of Lorene (and she had also been looking for Melius who seems to have had a record of leaving wives and disappearing). Whilst this sort of behaviour does not mean he was involved in Lula's disappearance, it does raise questions in my mind about his character.

Thank you SO much for this information! Very interesting indeed, and makes me wonder if there are even more siblings out there that do not know about each other. This is why I love the DNA programs through Ancestry and the like. It can help reconnect family members. I really, really hope the brother is found safe and alive some day and that there can at least be a little bit more closure.

Also, perhaps is Lorene submitted her DNA to NamUs (and they used her half-sister's DNA to show which DNA comes from the father's side) there could be something on record in case remains are ever found.

I can't remember the Websleuths rules, but are you allowed to post on Lorene's post to let her know there are options for identifying her mother's remains and there's a whole community of people wanting to support her search for her family?

I am looking for information on how to find a missing person or at least find out what was done by the police at the time and any newspaper articles that may have been written on this disappearance. Any ideas anyone might have would be appreciated.

Lula Mae Glascoe Nelson disappeared abt. 1941 in Long Beach, CA. She called her mom and told her she was going to pickup her paycheck in Wilmington, CA. Wilmington is a little harbor town next to Long Beach. She was taking the bus which should have been about an hour round trip. Her family never saw or heard from her again. She was newly divorced from M.Nelson and they had a dau. about eighteen months old. Lula had another child a boy named Eddie who was about 4 yrs old. She had never married his father. She had left Eddie with her roommate who when Lula didn't return took the boy to Lula's mom's house. The little girl was with her Dad.

At the time the police told my mother Lula's sister that there was a lot of white slavery going on in the harbor area and they didn't find anything to link the ex husband with Lula's disappearance. This case was never solved.
Eventually Lula's son Eddie was turned over to LA county social services and was adopted before the family could get him back...

Did she ever pick up her pay cheque? It's kind of disappointing LE boiled her disappearance down to white slavery. It sounds like they saw a young woman with an out of wedlock child and a failed marriage and wrote her off.
