Family members are left reeling over the death of 31-year-old Malessa Mooney.

Police made two separate welfare checks to Mooney's apartment - the first came late last week and the second was on Tuesday when her body was found.

Her family believes she was murdered.

LAPD's homicide bureau is now investigating to determine a cause of death.

There were actually two models found dead in DTLA in a week...

“I couldn’t recognize her,” Stevens recalled of the discovery. “I believe it was murder, I really do. One of her legs was up in the air in a kicking position. That’s not somebody who just laid in their bed and died.”

<snip>

Nikki’s death marks the second case of a model found dead in their apartment in downtown L.A. The two incidents took place less than three miles away from each other.

Also:

So far, Mooney’s case is being considered a murder, while Nikki’s has been deemed a “suspicious” death.

Could not locate thread for the other murdered model, maybe i missed it- started thread..

''How Mooney was killed remains unknown. An autopsy is expected to be conducted by the L.A. County coroner's office.

"We're supposed to grow old together," said Mooney's sister Jourdin Pauline. "That's not supposed to happen to her."

Family members said they became concerned late last week after they were unable to reach Mooney. Then, suddenly, their iPhone messages in text conversations with Mooney changed from blue to green.''
"Whoever did it stole her belongings, because they're trying to sell her iPhone and her MacBook," Pauline said. "Her iCloud had an alert like she was on."

''Residents living in the high-rise have been raising the alarm for weeks about a rash of suspicious incidents in and around the building.

Anyone with information regarding Mooney's death was urged to call LAPD Central Bureau Homicide Detectives Pierce or Marcinek at 213-996-4150. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222- 8477. During non-business hours or weekends, calls should be made to 877-527- 3247.''

Her name is Maleesa Mooney. Can't find any social media for her at all.
Was initially spelled Malessa:

Not sure why she''s being described as a model in these articles. The DM article above states she is an 'aspiring model' but works as a real-estate agent at Nest Seekers International. She must come in contact with a lot of clients as a real estate agent, hopefully it isn't connected...
I'm sure we all have heard of high profile cases of female real estate agents being killed by clients/lured by fake clients. Of course, not a 1:1 comparison, since Ms. Mooney was found in her apartment.

Maleesa Mooney, 31, was found dead in her Bunker Hill apartment on South Figueroa Street on Sept. 12, Fox LA reported.

Her death is being investigated as a homicide, police said.

It’s unclear if the two deaths are linked.

Mooney, a real estate agent, stopped responding to text messages and calls from her worried family.

No updates on the deaths of Maleesa Mooney nor Nikki Coates, but another model in the Bunker Hill apartments is very frightened. Management won't let her break her lease.

"(Brittany) Mason says she doesn’t feel safe after the murder of Mooney in her apartment on September 12. She says she’s seen people sleeping in the stairwells and other activity in the complex that makes her uncomfortable."
“Initially, the unit across from me, people were subleasing it so I was seeing different people coming in and out every day and the other thing was, at one point, people were having big parties and there were tons of men coming through here,” she said.

''Police haven’t released any details about the perpetrator or perpetrators involved in the killing of Mooney, or Nichole Coats, another L.A. model, who died nearby in the span of a week. Police haven’t said the two cases are connected, but friends and family say the similarities are hard to ignore.

They share concerns about a predator working the modeling world.''

There was a NewsNation interview with her sister that shared some more details

I find it especially interesting that random things are missing - her fridge?!, dirty clothes basket, phone, laptop?
"put her back together again" my word, how awful and savage.

and yes fridge gone...? i wonder if they checked any of the garbages/dumpsters to see if maybe it was just a coincidence and she threw it out because she was getting a new one? maybe that's far-fetched but hopefully LE did their due diligence just in case

All I know is it was a torturous act,” Pauline said. “They (the suspect) did multiple things to her body, you know?” The police “can’t even pinpoint what exactly took her.”

Pauline said she’s doing her “own investigation at this point.”

“I’m giving them everything that I know. … They said they can’t let us know anything,” Pauline said.

Pauline is a well-known South American pop star. In an emotional social media post, she vowed to provide justice for her sister.

her ankles were broken?
her fridge was missing??
what the what???
oh god she was pregnant too ...

“I just found out through the family [of the guy] she was talking to, they said that they were expecting,” Pauline said, later adding, “She just wanted to be married and have kids and not bother anybody, you know, definitely wanted a family.”

Police found Mooney dead when her family asked them to do a wellness check after not hearing from her for multiple days, HuffPost previously reported. Pauline told AB7 last month that her sister’s belongings were found missing at that time, including an iPhone and MacBook.

On Tuesday, Pauline told NewsNation that mortuary workers had revealed devastating details about Mooney’s death to her family.

“The people at the mortuary don’t even want us to see her because they said it’s traumatic. The guy at the mortuary started crying because of how traumatic it is. It’s like, why would someone do this to her?” she asked, adding that both of Mooney’s ankles had been broken and that she “was definitely in a struggle.”

She had suffered blunt force trauma to her head, torso and arms, the medical examiner’s report states, indicating the cause of death was “homicidal violence.”

Mooney’s wrists and ankles were bound together, and the bindings were tied to each other behind her back with “miscellaneous electronic cords and clothing items.” A gag made from an article of clothing was stuffed in her mouth.

[...]

“The blunt force traumatic injuries observed at autopsy are generally not considered life-threatening on their own,” the medical examiner said. “However, based on the circumstances of how Ms. Mooney was found, these injuries suggest she was likely involved in [a] violent physical altercation prior to her death.” READ THE FULL REPORT (WARNING)

Interestingly, the report makes no mention of pregnancy or a fetus. Page 6 of the report:

GENITAL SYSTEM:
The uterus is symmetrical and the uterine cavity is not enlarged. The fallopian tubes are unremarkable. The endometrium is unremarkable. The cervix and vagina have a normal appearance for age. The ovaries are unremarkable.

Nor is it mentioned anywhere else in the report.
