Location Found: Mill Valley, California

Circumstances of Recovery: At 10:59 p.m., a park ranger at the Pan Toll Ranger Station on Mt. Tamalpais alerted police after a young person reported finding a man hanging from a tree branch. Deputies discovered the decomposing body of a middle-aged man hanging from a 15-foot-high tree branch about a quarter mile from Ridgecrest Road.

The man made a noose with four strands of rope which he tied together. The noose itself was intricate, with three loops around the neck and three loops around the tree branch, and wire used to fasten the loops together. Before jumping from the branch, the man apparently used his sweater to tie his hands behind his back to prevent him from trying to remove the noose. A knife which was likely used to cut the rope was found stuck in the tree about the branch. A light blue shirt was also found in the tree.

The man carried no identification and left no note, but there was $190 in cash and a receipt from a Mill Valley hardware store for wire, clothesline, and a special knife inside his shirt pocket. Authorities estimate he had been dead for about a month.

Deputy Coroner Richard W. Madigan said the man had been dead for about a month and it appeared to be suicide but an autopsy would be performed.

The body was discovered about a quarter-of-a-mile off Ridgecrest Road, and a half-mile from Rock Springs, Madigan said.

There was no identification or notes, he reported.

Sheriff's deputies said they were notified at 10:59 p.m. Saturday by Tim W. Parker, ranger at Pan Toll Ranger Station, that an unidentified youth had reported seeing the body.

Deputies said the body was hanging from a rope tied to a branch about 15 feet high.

There was a knife stuck in the tree above the branch and a short piece of rope beneath the tree.

Deputies said the man had gray hair and wore glasses and a gold-colored jacket, pants and high-top boots. A light-blue shirt was found in the tree.

In the man's pockets were $190 in cash and a receipt from a Mill Valley hardware store where he bought clothes line, wire, and a special knife for cutting it into four lengths.

He made the noose with four strands of rope wire together.

[Head of the Marin sheriff's identification bureau Edmond] Mauberret said the suicide was so carefully planned and executed that just before the man jumped from a limb to kill himself, he made a special knot with the sleeves of his sweater to tie his hands behind his back.

This, Mauberret said, made it impossible for him to save himself by grabbing the rope around his neck.

The man wore horn-rimmed glasses, light blue shirt, gold sweater and tan hiking boots. He had "salt and pepper" hair. He left no note.

The body was found hanging from an intricate rope arrangement with triple loops around a tree and the man's neck. The loops had been fastened with wire, probably with a pliers, but no such tools have been found, [Deputy Coroner Richard] Madigan said. A knife, apparently used to cut the rope, was found stuck in the tree.

Madigan said there was no identification on the man but he had $190 in cash. He wore glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses was found on the ground.

Madigan said the man had a sweater tied around his arms such as a hiker might wear.

"Hippies found the body" Yep, it was the 1960s. (edit: source: Daily Independent Journal article)

Not really sure how someone could tie both their arms together securely with a sweater. Is there any precedent for this?

I'd be interested to know if tests were ever performed to find out whether it was actually possible for him to tie his hands behind his back himself so securely that he couldn't wiggle free.
Do suicidal people usually take these steps in case they "change their mind"? It seems like if you had to prevent yourself in case you changed your mind then you had some doubt in the first place!

Sadly as it appears he was so intent on taking his life, then to tie the sweater into a knot would be relatively easy I would think.

Or he could just have got a grip, in each hand, of the two sleeves and just sort of twirled his hands around and around to form a tight grip entangling his arms.

It was just that the coroner said he made a special knot with the sleeves of his sweater to tie his hands behind his back, So I assumed it was more intricate than just twisting the sweater around? I know am probably seeing something odd where there isn't anything except a suicide, it just stikes me as odd that:
1) He was able to tie his hands behind his back while his head was in a noose while standing in the branch of a tree. (his head had to already be in the noose as otheriwise with his hands tied he wouldn't have been able to put it in)
2) He did all this in case he changed his mind? That suggets to me that he had some serious doubt about actually killing himself in the first place?

Of course, he may have taken these precautions as he may have worried that he would back out and he really was intent on killing himself.

I just find it so sad that this person has never been identified-they were in such dire straights to do this and still they don't have their name, it saddens me. The items he had were quite specific so someone must have missed him!

Yes you are right, as I hadn't read that part what the coroner had said.

So terribly sad for sure no one has identified him.

All we can hope is he Rests in Peace.

The mention of knots makes me wonder if he was involved with sailing. His clothes puts me in mind of an outfit someone attending or teaching at a college might wear, sort of a hipster equivalent of its time. Or perhaps a musician.
