Mitchell Hernandez, who was visiting family, was last seen November 20. “He was last seen in [the] Alderpoint area… at around 2:00 to 2:30 pm down by the river near Fort Seward…I found his backpack kinda by the waters edge just sitting there.”

”It is under investigation as to what he may have been doing when he left the people he was with…Mitchell Hernandez. If there was an incident, we would like the people to come forward so we can speak to them in regards to what may have occurred…He may have been in possession of a firearm.”

His sister was told her brother had a gun. “[He had been] given a .40 caliber pistol,” she said. “The gun is gone and my brother is missing. It has been 9 days…The worst case is he’s gone and we don’t have any resolution…. He has family; he has his kids. We don’t know what the truth is.”

If he ended up in the river, for any reason, wouldn't his body float downstream and eventually get hung up somewhere?

What was he wearing when last seen? Can sonar detect a gun on the river bottom?

The Humboldt 35

Why does Humboldt County have the highest rate of missing persons reports in the state?

Of the 313 reports filed for missing adults in Humboldt County in 2016, the vast majority were closed: 230 returned or were located, three were found dead, 15 arrested, eight were declared "voluntary missing," five were marked withdrawn, one marked "unknown" and 51 classified as "other," which includes suspicious circumstances. Of those 51 people, only one remains on the AG's website: Mitchell Hernandez, a 47-year-old man who walked out of a family member's home near Rancho Sequoia in Alderpoint the day before Thanksgiving, reportedly while carrying a .40 caliber pistol and a backpack. The backpack was found next to the Eel River near Fort Seward. Hernandez, described as possibly having mental health issues, remains missing.

WoW! He was in the water over a year and they still found him, or maybe he was on that beach the whole time. Either way, I'm glad he'll have peace now. :(

RIP Mitchell :rose:

RIP Mitchell :rose:

I wonder why it took over a year to ID him?
Wait, he was found January of 2017? I thought they meant this past January, in 2018. hmmm

Yes 2017. From the above article:

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has identified the body of a man discovered on the South Jetty beach on Jan. 6, 2017. The body has been identified as missing person Mitchell G. Hernandez. Hernandez was reported missing to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 23, 2016. He was last seen in the Alderpoint area on Nov. 20, 2016. Hernandez was 47 years old at the time he went missing. Hernandez’s cause of death was determined to be consistent with drowning.

An unfortunate end for Mitchell. But if he has been found, he is no longer missing. With no foul play suspected, it looks like time to close this case.
