60 people treated after Delta plane dumps fuel near schools while approaching LAX

Delta Airlines issued the following statement:

"Shortly after takeoff, Flight 89 from LAX to Shanghai experienced an engine issue requiring the aircraft to return to LAX. The aircraft landed safely after an emergency fuel release to reduce landing weight."

There are special fuel-dumping procedures for planes that fly in or out of U.S. airports, according to a statement issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"These procedures call for fuel to be dumped over designated unpopulated areas, typically at higher altitudes so the fuel atomizes and disperses before it reaches the ground," the FAA stated. They were investigating the incident.

Holy Cow!

I guess the pilot didnt make sure he was over unpopulated areas before dumping fuel.

My goodness. Lucky nobody was lighting a cigarette around that time they were sprayed with Jet Fuel.

We live in a rural area but we must have a flight plan that goes near our home because there are always planes going overhead usually at higher altitudes. Whenever we hear and see one I always have a little apprehension about what may be falling from the plane. Like even a loose heavy metal part that breaks off or something. You never know what could come off or out of a plane when its flying overhead. 99.99% of the time there is nothing to worry about but with my luck, I would be in the 00.01 % and get hit with toilet liquids being dumped :)

Does anyone remember these stories about frozen blocks of toilet liquid come crashing through someone's roof? That would be the type of luck I would have. :)

omg thanks for making me paranoid!
well to be truthful I already am but I never thought of toilet liquid falling!
we are under a flight path and 10 minutes from the airport so planes fly overhead at quite low altitude
I often worry that they're going to crash before the airport and sometimes they're so loud I think they're gonna hit our house
