Wow, that is strange!

this from the article makes me think suicide ... if mechanical, they would've tried to jump out the door IMO; if the driver had a medical issue, the passenger would've tried to jump out IMO:

According to the Mercury News, the California Highway Patrol said Teixeira was driving the SUV when it entered the parking lot and did not slow or stop as it hit a log barrier at the cliff's edge.

OMG!!
Another horrific tragedy.
How sad.
I do wonder if it was intentional and not an accident OR if driver had medical incident that could have caused it.

Maybe something was wrong with the car?
Two suicides together seems very unlikely.

but as I posted upthread, if something was wrong with the car, why wouldn't they make an attempt to open the doors and jump out before it went over the cliff?

I can’t read this without thinking of the Hart family. So sad for all.

If the mechanical failure, or driver error occurred at the last second, there just wouldn't be time to recognize the car was going over, unbuckle, open door and jump.

I’ve been to that trailhead and scenic overlook, and there isn’t much room for breaking. Probably the driver didn’t have time to react.

I'm wondering if the driver hit the gas instead of the brake or dropped something at the wrong time. That to me seems more likely than suicide.

Driver inattention or error, even for a second, seems more likely to me than suicide.

"Witnesses saw the vehicle driving through the parking lot — and it just kept driving. It didn't stop. There was no accelerating but also no braking," deRutte told the Associated Press.

and 'driving through the parking lot' makes it sound like there would've been enough notice to either brake or jump out to me

maybe someone local can post a google streetview

I'm not local but this is bodega bay trailhead, which is where the People article says it happened

I've been looking around the whole area on street view, there's a few carparks around in the area.
