CA - Murder victims Identified as Rob Reiner and wife Michele - LA Dec 14 2025

  • #1,121
He remains on suicide watch and is currently being held in solitary confinement, where he is required to wear a blue suicide-prevention smock at all times, a police source exclusively confirmed to PEOPLE.
…..
Nick is not permitted to communicate with anyone other than his legal counsel and authorized jail personnel, according to the police source. He is only allowed to leave his cell for court appearances or medical reasons, and must be escorted by a sergeant at all times. He is monitored with a video camera that is attached to his escorting officer.

“This is important so that no one compromises this high-profile case, and so that no civilian or inmate can ask him questions, such as why he killed his parents,” the same police source tells PEOPLE.

Oh I absolutely agree, if this is really what happened.

Sometimes I get the feeling that some of these articles are skewing back and forth….this happened….no it didn’t….yes it did. I have a feeling the truth is lying somewhere in between. jmo
It’s still early yet.
There are always inconsistencies in the immediate aftermath. Every msm piggy backing off the other and all kinds of sources “ close” to the family with salacious details.
Once the dust settles we should have a clearer picture.

Things that stood out to me from the interview linked below.

4:50:
Interviewer - "What do you feel about the tough love?"

NN - "I'm here, so, it worked."
=========================================
5:45 -
NN - "I was an emotional kid who had problems."
=========================================
6:14 -
NR: "I get crazy. I get crazy. You don't want to set me off."
RR - [nodding as NR says that, then *laughs*] "We can both get pretty hot and there were times when we both did get hot."
=========================================
11:06 - I was a real like nutcase. I was crazy. It was more than drugs. It's always like more than that. [...] It's life. Life goes on. Life happens. Things flare-up.

We don’t know very much about his diagnoses. We know he had issues with drugs, but he does say it was more than the drugs.
He may have had a schizoaffective disorder, which comes with some psychotic symptoms, or he may have had bipolar I disorder with psychotic symptoms and mania, it just really isn’t clear.
I suspect this case is going to turn up a lot of evidence about NRs mental health history and a lot of witness testimony.

I'm not sure having a Sergeant escort him at all times is the best way to achieve this (so no one can ask him questions). IMO 1 person isn't enough.

I was a bank teller back in the day and we always had to have a backup person around, like if we were counting money, going into the vault, etc. We were NEVER allowed to be alone. That way you couldn't be blamed for something if you were never alone with the money. That's how it should be in Nick's case, IMO. Like... who's watching the Sergeant? No one. He should have a backup at all times like I used to as a Teller.

rsbm

if NR had hallucinations or paranoia around his parents specifically, that would explain why he killed them and not anyone else. to me this is not proof of sanity.

again rsbm. i think this too is not proof of sanity. you can believe the strangest things in your mind but still be able to complete certain tasks. and he didn’t really do these things looking like a normal person. the hotel staff thought he was tweaking and i think he had hung a bloody sheet in front of his window, iirc?

this reply is not meant to defend NR’s horrible actions, and i think we probably just don’t know enough to accurately assess his state of mind! i just feel strongly about misconceptions around mental illness.
He hung a sheet over the window, perhaps paranoia or perhaps to block anyone viewing blood as he cleaned up. It was not a bloody sheet. That would have been noted and reported on IMOOO.

He was of sane mind to walk into a gas station store and use a credit card to purchase Gatorade. Plus, reacted to undercover law enforcement in store by staring down and turning away from them. Sounds like maybe the voices in his head finally ceased after he acted on impulses prior to 4am. If someone is truly insane at time of murders, they would not be about to be sane in every sense post killings. I do find it odd he did not clean up blood in motel shower which to me signals that he did not really care if he got caught- like Jodi Arias or Betty Broderick- the act of killing was more important than the consequences of doing so. Nothing can be done to undo what happened. I just hope no one associated with the events at party and beyond feel like they should have done something different. NR is the sole person to blame and hopefully he stays in jail forever so no one else is harmed by him. This was a calculated double murder in my opinion based on what's presented by media.

Housekeeping was already in room to clean for next guests which to me means that it was no longer NR's property. Motel most likely gave police permission to enter room so no search warrant needed.

They should have gotten one anyway. I hope they at least read him his Miranda rights when they arrested him. It would be terrible if he avoids accountability because of errors.

In New Hampshire, we saw police patiently waiting for a search warrant at the public storage facility, even though they likely knew the Brown U shooter was already dead in there.

However, Nick had struggled with drugs since his teenage years, been in an out of rehabs, spent spells homeless and, according to a report Friday by TMZ.com, had recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“As a kid, Nick always needed more attention [than the others],” said one source close to the family. “He would throw fits” — which later included punching walls; on at least one occasion, he wrecked a TV and lamp.

“He was a very hyper little boy. They always had to keep an extra eye on him,” the source said.

“He wasn’t stable. There were many times when Nick had a rant and it affected everyone … Michele would say to people ‘Please don’t upset him.’ The family and all their helpers would basically cater to him. The rule was always ‘Give him what he wants.'”

Romy and Jake, who are both now involved in the movie business, did all that they could to pitch in. As children, the source said, “they helped him. [They would] keep him entertained and calm.”

[..]

“There were months when Nick would be okay,” said the family source. “He isolated himself in the guest home, he was quiet. He went on and off [drugs]

“Then all of a sudden he would go downhill. They would get personal coaches to help him out, instead of putting him in an institution.

“They felt like he did better when the coaches came in. But then Nick would get upset that the coaches were there and [the Reiners] would fire them.”

Sources said there were never any signs Nick would do anything violent, as happened on December 13, and if his parents had feared him “they could have locked him out of the main house if they were worried,” but that’s something that wasn’t in their character to do.

From the quoted MSM link dated 12/19/25:

LOS ANGELES — Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago and his medication was changed or adjusted at some point before the killings of his parents, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the case.

There remains a discrepancy as to when NR was actually diagnosed with schizophrenia (i.e., recently vs several years ago)....

According to this, it sounds like the detective showed up about 1:00 am Monday about a welfare check and check the room out, but the housekeeper had already cleaned the room hours before.

If the room was as bad as described in earlier articles , why didn’t anyone contact the authorities?

ETA: Hadn’t they already gotten NR on Sunday about 9 something pm?

Well that was sure sad to watch. I had no idea we lost all of those stars. What rock have I been living under? :(

The same one most of us have been. Chase the paycheck, pay the bills, clean the house, get teeth cleaned, and hopefully smell the roses along the way.

Surveillance footage shows Reiner purchasing a sports drink with cash at a gas station in South L.A. around 8:20 p.m., roughly an hour before he was arrested. In the video, Reiner has a red backpack slung over his shoulder and is wearing a black and green jacket with white stripes and a dark baseball cap.

An employee at the Arco gas station said that Reiner was hanging out in the area for close to an hour before his arrest. The employee declined to provide his name to The Times because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

“He was just standing up there,” the employee said. “I don’t know if he was waiting for somebody, but he spent at least one hour just standing there.”

At one point, the employee said, Reiner lingered inside the gas station after he saw an off-duty security guard in the parking lot outside.

“He was nervous,” the employee said.

This sounds like a big legal kerfuffle. If the subject was that dangerous, IWT his medical team had a duty to report? Maybe they did and no action was taken?

What a sad, sad mess.

Did this hotel not have drapes that could be closed?

Photos of the hotel are available and yes there were window treatments. At some point NR hung a sheet over the window, reportedly. I offer no interpretations.
