“This is senseless and I want some answers because my daughter is gone,” said Sharon Coats, Nikki’s mother. “And it’s not fair. I want everybody to find out who did this to her. She shouldn’t be gone.”

“We need to know what happened,” said May Stevens, Nikki’s aunt.

The last time anyone heard from Nikki, she told friends she was going out on a date on Friday, Sept. 8. That would be her last conversation with loved ones.

When she didn’t answer any calls or texts that weekend, her father and aunt decided to visit her apartment complex, Eighth & Grand on Sept. 10.''

That’s when they made the gut-wrenching discovery. Sharon said the scene was gruesome and her daughter’s bed was found bloodied.

“I couldn’t recognize her,” Stevens recalled of the discovery. “I believe it was murder, I really do. One of her legs was up in the air in a kicking position. That’s not somebody who just laid in their bed and died.”

Sharon said her daughter didn’t have any enemies and was loved by friends and the community. She wants answers and for the suspect to be caught before they potentially strike again.

“I don’t know who she went out with or what transpired there,” Sharon said. “I have no idea but I’m going to find out. So if you’re out there, you’re going to get caught. You’re messing with the wrong person.”

''Nikki’s death marks the second case of a model found dead in their apartment in downtown L.A.''

Noting the thread for the other model who was found murdered in her LA apartment..

Loved ones are distraught after a young model was found dead inside her apartment in downtown Los Angeles, marking the second time a similar incident has occurred within a week. Family members who discovered the body of Nichole Coats, 32, known as Nikki, inside her apartment are devastated and frustrated at the lack of answers and information coming from investigators. “This is senseless and I want some answers because my daughter is gone,” Sharon said. “And it’s not fair. I want everybody to find out who did this to her. She shouldn’t be gone.” “We need to know what happened,” said May Stevens, Nikki’s aunt. The last time anyone heard from Nikki, she told friends she was going out on a date on Friday, Sept. 8. KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on September 16, 2023.''

I think these two murders are connected. Both aspiring models, killed within days of each other, and they live 5 minutes away from each other.
Could the perp be a woman, jealousy being the motive?

Did Nikki and Maleesa know each other, were they connected to the same modeling agency?

It's tragic and awful, I feel for the distraught families.

"After the family heard about the death of Mooney, they started to get suspicious - especially since they say Coats' apartment is five minutes away from Mooney's.

Coats' mom says people are being interviewed at the apartment building.

"She had four friends go into... her apartment. I don't know how long they stayed there. They came out, but Nikki didn't come out. This was on Friday," Sharon said."

Nichole “Nikki” Coats, 32, was found in her apartment on Grand Avenue after police responded to a call from relatives who were unable to reach her on Sept. 10, the LA Times reported.

Coats’ death is not being investigated as a homicide, citing police and the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

But her family told KTLA that her bed was found bloodied.

“This is senseless and I want some answers because my daughter is gone,” Sharon Coats, Nikki’s mother, told the outlet. “And it’s not fair. I want everybody to find out who did this to her. She shouldn’t be gone.”

"I went in and I turned the corner, I went over — she's covered up — I went over and touched her and said 'Nicole?,'" her father, Guy Edward Coats Jr. recounted to KCAL News. "I touched her arm and she was just like stone."

From the link (and quoted previously) this really stands out (imo)

Not likely? Not trying to tie all the crimes together, but wondering just a teeny bit about the perp wanted for the break in and assault in LA and the subsequent murder of Nicole Morin in Belair. complete speculation, imo.

''Family members are worried about a serial killer on the loose after the revalation that two Los Angeles-area models have died within three miles of one another in the span of days.

On September 10, family members discovered model Nichole 'Nikki' Coats' body in her apartment two days after they'd last heard from her via text, when she'd told them she was headed on a date.

Her death is still being ruled as 'suspicious' pending a Los Angeles County Coroner's report.''

Just two days later and three miles away, Maleesa Mooney, 31, was found dead inside her luxurious Los Angeles high-rise apartment after her family called for a wellness check because their blue text message conversations with her turned green.

Coats' aunt, May Stevens, who discovered her body, suggested in a press conference that 'there is a predator on the loose,' though only Mooney's death has been officially deemed a homicide.''

''

Investigators launched a homicide investigation due to the circumstances surrounding Mooney's death.

"That scared us all, because now we feel that it's related," said Linda St. Clair, Coats' aunt. "She wasn't far from where Nicole lived and they were the same age bracket and she was a model."

Though they haven't been able to verify if the deaths are linked, Coats' family members strongly believe that they are.

"I just feel in my heart that there's some foul play somewhere," said May Stevens, another of Coats' aunts. "Somebody's not saying something. Somebody's not talking."

Since apparently both lived in luxury apartments, I'd think that the entrance would require a key or code. At the least, wouldn't there be cameras in the lobby? If so, was the same individual seen in both buildings?
Or did the women know the person and let him/her/they in? A date? Maintenance person?
Or does the perp live in one of the buildings?

what does it mean that her texts turned from blue to green?
Her iPhone no longer had service. It wasn't receiving the messages they were sending, which would be unusual for an extended period of time, I assume especially so since she likely used social media frequently as a model.

ETA- on the other thread related to her, it states that the person responsible is likely trying to sell the personal items they took from her, including her phone

so the messages turn green when the phone doesn't have service?
can you possibly link the other thread please?

  • ''If your iPhone messages are green, it means they're being sent as SMS texts rather than iMessages.
  • You'll always see green when texting Android users, or when you're not connected to the internet.
  • If all of your iPhone messages are green, you should make sure iMessage is turned on in Settings.
''You may have noticed that the text messages in your iPhone's Messages app can appear as either green or blue.

The difference? Green messages are ordinary SMS text messages, while blue messages are using Apple's proprietary iMessage format. If you're used to seeing blue iMessage text bubbles but they are suddenly green, it can be an indication you've been blocked but that's just one possibility, and isn't necessarily the most likely.

Here's everything you need to know about why your iPhone is sending green messages, and how to fix it if you think it's a mistake.''

Coats' mother, Sharon, told Eyewitness News that her family suspects foul play was involved.

"I'm devastated that it happened to Nicole. This is horrible... it's like a dream, that my daughter's going to walk through the door and she's not. She's gone," she said.

"I'm just trying to piece everything together, but I still feel that something fishy is going on," she added.

Too much alike not to be related, me thinks. Police just has not discovered the link yet. Bet there is one. Two really beautiful young women, such a crime they're gone so early. Thoughts and prayers for the families and for LAPD to uncover EVERYTHING in order to solve this.

About a dozen people of various ages line up for a photo in front of a residence.

Relatives of Nichole Coats, who was found dead in her downtown L.A. apartment on Sept. 10.

Coats’ mother, Sharon Coats, told The Times on Tuesday afternoon that she believed her daughter was killed because of how her daughter’s bedroom looked when she was found.

“The bed was covered up and I went over there and I pulled the sheets back and I started screaming because there was blood everywhere,” she said. “I think it was foul play, and I’m not going to rest until I find the killer.”

Sharon Coats last saw her daughter, who was known as Nikki, about two weeks ago when she visited her for four days in Los Angeles. The Lake Forest resident said her daughter had tried to contact her a few days before her death, but she missed her calls. She said Nikki had been getting ready for a trip to Cancún, Mexico.

“She was supposed to go ... with four other friends, and she didn’t make it,” Sharon Coats said. “This is senseless. I’m just glad I was able to see her.”

Curious about this date - most women give some kind of details to their friends about who they've made plans with, especially if it's someone really new. Socials and phone have to have a trail. There's no way suspects in both cases slipped away completely undetected - digital footprint and security cams have to tell some kind of story.

Do we know whether she used online dating apps, or whether she was in a relationship? I'm curious whether this was a stalker who slipped into her building behind her, or whether she met someone and invited them to her apartment at some point during the evening.
