Sheriff's homicide detectives began a death investigation after hikers in the desert here found human skeletal remains in a shallow grave Saturday afternoon.

Authorities said the hikers found the partially uncovered grave about 2:45 p.m. More bones were found scattered about the area by animals.

The remains appeared to have been there for several months, a sheriff's spokesman said.
