Circumstances of Recovery: The skeletal remains of Jane Doe #06-87 were found in a shallow grave in the desert near Phelan, CA, 2.75 miles west of Highway 395 and .5 miles north of Duncan Road. She is estimated to be a White female adult, probably between 30 and 50 (dental age: 35-45), and stood between 5'1" and 5'4", with coarse straight brown hair (with gray). She is described as "robust and muscular." Her toenails had been painted with red polish and her teeth were in excellent alignment (extensive dental work). Identity may only be established with dental X-rays (on file) and DNA (refer to CODIS #BK-04-000734). Possible comparison with "smiling photographs" (showing teeth).

Sheriff's homicide detectives began a death investigation after hikers in the desert here found human skeletal remains in a shallow grave Saturday afternoon.
Authorities said the hikers found the partially uncovered grave about 2:45 p.m. More bones were found scattered about the area by animals.
The remains appeared to have been there for several months, a sheriff's spokesman said.
