He said the stabbing seemed more frightening than a shooting because it was up close and personal. Li, who is a teaching assistant, said he does not feel as safe as before and is second-guessing how he interacts with his own students.
“I think I’m good with my students, but even so, I will be even more careful now on whether I'm going too hard on them,” he said.

January 2018:

Judge rules student insane in professor’s killing

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Leslie A. Swain ruled Tuesday that former graduate student David Jonathan Brown was not guilty by reason of insanity for the first-degree murder of USC professor Bosco Tjan, according to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office.

The ruling was made after reviewing evaluation reports from two psychiatrists, including Risa Grand, a forensic psychiatrist who works with the L.A. County Superior Court and is a clinical assistant professor at the Keck School of Medicine and closely examined Brown’s mental state.

The ruling, based on reports from two psychiatrists, means that David Jonathan Brown could spend the rest of his life in a state psychiatric hospital. The 29-year-old has a March 6 hearing to determine where he will be placed.

David Jonathan Brown, the former USC grad student who pled not guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal stabbing of Professor Bosco Tjan, will be confined to Patton State Hospital, a judge ruled Tuesday. Brown could stay at the "locked-down" mental health facility, near San Bernardino, for the remainder of his life.

Updates on Brown's condition while at Patton State Hospital will be forwarded to his public defender every six months. He could potentially be released to a lower level care facility and eventually into the community if his condition improves. In order for Brown to be released back in to the community, an additional proceeding would need to take place.

In an emotional statement, the victim’s widow, Carissa Pang, said the family’s life was “forever changed” with her husband “being taken from us unexpectedly.”

She noted that the family had been planning to travel to Hong Kong to celebrate his mother’s 80th birthday, but said her mother-in-law had to fly 15 hours to attend her son’s funeral instead.

“He was not a soldier in a war zone or policeman in a dangerous street. He was murdered in his research lab,” the victim’s widow said, telling the judge that she feels helpless being thrown into the life of a single mother to their young son “because of one man’s decision to end my husband’s life.”
