The friend maybe deceased anyway now, but if not, I'm guessing they may have at least known what happened to him, if not participated in it. Perhaps they even knew beforehand what would happen. Mafia and "friends" don't exactly go together sometimes. Or it could be they were also puzzled when he went missing. I doubt they are missing too, though.

That makes sense. Wonder if the sister (Barbara Brock) quoted in recent news articles is the same sister referenced in NamUs as being the last to see him alive. Would love to know what the family's suspicions were at the time about Robert's disappearance.
