Note that there is a video included in the WaPo link which, IMO, makes the police account of what happened look pretty disingenuous. There is no evidence in the video that any protestors were pounding on or kicking the vehicle prior to the collision. The car clearly accelerates forward, hitting the woman, despite her white protest sign shining in the headlights. No way she didn't see her. And he hits her square on. Not a side clip or glancing blow.
The officer needs to be held accountable for his actions and punished in court of law. Period.
Luckily the woman wasn't seriously hurt, or killed.
"The vehicle accelerated and struck her, accelerated very fast and struck her violently and she fell to the ground," Danilowitz said. "It was a very fast acceleration, not the way you would move with people around."
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said protesters approached the vehicle and "began yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicle's exterior."
"The collision occurred while the patrol vehicle was traveling at slow speeds," said spokesman Sgt. Shaun Hampton.

The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol while the department conducts an internal review, Hampton added. It was not immediately clear whether any disciplinary measures would be taken.
“He never even stopped. It was a hit-and-run,” Cleveland told the Sacramento Bee. “If I did that, I’d be charged. It’s disregard for human life.”
