A man named Rufus Flewellen lived at 1262 Grove St in 1968 according to the city directories. I believe he was born in 1904 and died in 1992.

I wonder about the COD. Natural causes/OD/homeless?

Homicide victim placed there?

I guess either scenario could fit with the bedspread and curtains, and the fact that her death was days prior? Could mean she was killed elsewhere and placed there that day, or that people were not surprised to see her "sleeping" there. I can't imagine days going by with nobody noticing a body in the driveway.

This area is pretty close to Haight-Ashbury.

I wonder if she could be Wanda Gail Loe. I don't know much about her vitals and such, but am working on getting her into NamUs so hopefully there will be more information soon. She was 24, I believe, and she went missing in July 1968 from Tahoe City, CA. I can't find an exact date that she disappeared.

here’s my write-up for Jane Doe with all the information that i could find on her. hopefully it’s of some use to people:

San Francisco Jane Doe 1968

At about 6:30am on Tuesday, July 9, 1968, a man named Clarence Lewis — of 560 Scott St — was walking in San Francisco (SF) when he spotted a bundle wrapped in a bedspread in a driveway off 1262 Grove St, in SF's "hippie area." Lewis pulled back a corner of the bedspread and saw that it covered a body. He promptly called the police.

The body was that of a blonde woman who had died only days prior. Her ankles and wrists were tied, and there were marks on her throat indicating that she had been strangled.

Inspectors William Armstrong and Dave Toschi said that it appeared that the woman had been killed somewhere else, then transported to the driveway and dumped there. At the time, it was first reported that the woman was "blonde, somewhere in her 20s, [and] wore a blue-green pullover blouse, brown jeans, an olive-colored corduroy jacket, [and] blue anklet socks but no shoes." The woman apparently had a "hippie appearance." One clipping states that she had been dumped in an alley.

Doe Network and NamUs specifically state that Jane Doe was found lying on a walk-way beside the driveway on the east side of 1262 Grove St. The two databases provide information that expands upon/slightly differs from the account from that papers described above. According to the two databases, the woman was estimated to be 25 to 40 years old, and was measured to be 5'8 and 150 lbs. She had died days prior, and her face was recognizable.

According to NamUs and Doe Network, the woman's hair was dyed blonde, and she had blue eyes with a hint of gray. She had an irregular healed scar on the volar aspect of her left forearm that appeared to be a tendon repair incision. Both of her ears were pierced, and the nails of both of her index fingers had been chewed. She wore underwear, a bra, "levi-type slacks," a pull-over blouse, and a "jacket-coat." A bedspread and curtains were found near the body. There was a pale area of skin on both of her pinkie fingers, corresponding to rings; the one on the right hand showed greenish pigmentation, suggesting that it was made of brass.

Jane Doe's fingerprints are available for comparison, while her dentals and DNA are not. She has zero rule-outs on NamUs. No reconstructions of her have been created despite the fact that her face was recognizable at time of discovery. Her NamUs case, #UP11456, was created on July 29, 2013 and last updated September 10, 2025.

If you have any information regarding Jane Doe, please contact the San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner's Office at (415) 641-3600or [email protected]. The agency case number is 1968-1306. Any little piece of information counts.
