SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A girl believed to be between 1 and 2 years old and wearing only a diaper was found tonight wandering in a San Marcos apartment complex.

Deputies were called about 6 p.m. to the Barham Villas Apartments, located in the 500 block of East Barham Drive near state Route 78, by residents who told authorities they found a toddler near the basketball court located within the complex, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

A resident provided clothes to keep the child warm and deputies and residents went door-to-door looking for the child's family and the complex's management team sent out an email alerting residents about the little girl being found on the property, the department said.

As of 10 p.m., the child's family had not been found and the department said there were no reports of a missing child with any other local law enforcement agency.

The toddler was taken to the San Marcos Sheriff's Station and Child Welfare Service has been contacted.

Anyone who knows the child or her family was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200.

Oh, what a beautiful little girl -- of course, they always are -- her complexion and hair; her big, dark eyes; pretty little lips -- a beauty. She seems okay enuff -- a bit thoughtful in the first pic, and tired in the 2nd, but not crying. I'm assuming they were taken by LE after she was found.
The apt. complex looks very nice, including all the tennis courts, pool, and other outside amenities.
Is her mom/caregiver dead in one of those apts? In an auto accident and in the hospital? Was the mom taken away and the little girl put out of the vehicle? Drugged-up mom/caregiver? So many not-good possibilities.
Another child for whom many, many couples would line up to adopt...
Maybe mom/family will see the pic and go to LE soon -- or already.

I just have to know -
Why did the babysitter put him to bed in only a diaper?
How did he get out of the apartment?
Did no one change the diaper to notice he was a boy?

Thankfully caring people found him.

I'm confused, how come nobody actually checked if the child was a boy or a girl? Was the diaper not changed? Wow.

I hope things for this child are better than they sound to me WRT the babysitter (and we haven't heard that side of the story, I admit).
How many children were in the b-sitter's charge? How can you lose one toddler -- out the door -- to the outside near a highway??
You watch them, and you count them. You count them.

Years ago on a news TV interview, the mother of quintuplets was asked about caring for her little toddlers (five toddlers, omigosh!) and how did a typical day go -- she said something like, "I probably count to 5, one thousand times a day!" Indeed.

So glad he's safe and with his mother. Sweet beautiful boy.

Right? I thought the same!

Gorgeous child.

I'd say that "sitter" was sitting on her rear. She must be fired by now. Kind people had clothing, and were generous, but even police will change a diaper.

Weird incident. Glad cutie is OK.
