Two men on snowmobiles missing near Jackson’s Arm

Yesterday at approximately 4:30 p.m., Deer Lake RCMP received a report that two men were missing after separating from a group who were snowmobiling between Jackson’s Arm and Harbour Deep. The other group members attempted to locate the missing men but were unsuccessful.

The men are aged 64 and 68 years old. One is from Corner Brook area and the other is from Mount Pearl.

Fire and Emergency Services was contacted and a Cormorant helicopter from the Joint Rescue Command Centre was dispatched from Gander to search the area. Due to poor weather and loss of lighting the search was stopped last night and resumed this morning.

RCMP officers and members of the Deer Lake Ground Search and Rescue Team are searching the area on snowmobile today. The Cormorant helicopter has also been conducting an aerial search; however, efforts have been hampered by poor weather conditions and reduced visibility.

One of the snowmobilers who went missing on the Northern Peninsula this weekend is recovering in hospital, while the search continues for the second missing man.

Stan Rice, 64, from Mount Pearl, was located by a search crew in a helicopter on Sunday and taken to hospital in Corner Brook, says his wife.

"He's very emotional," Ruth Rice told CBC's St. John's Morning Show. "He wants to get out of that bed and go with the rest of his buddies to find [his friend]."
