Two students and a professor are in hospital after being stabbed during a class at the University of Waterloo on Wednesday afternoon.

Waterloo police said the stabbing occurred in a classroom at Hagey Hall at around 3:30 p.m.

The three victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Supt. Shaena Morris said.''

A male suspect, who she said was a member of the university community, was arrested at the scene with the assistance of university security officials. Morris would not elaborate on how the suspect is connected to the school.

When asked about a possible motive, Morris said it is too early in the investigation to determine the reason behind the attack.''

Nick Manning, associate vice president of communications for the University of Waterloo, confirmed that the victims are two students and a professor.

He added that the stabbing occurred during a second-year philosophy class.

"This is a terrible incident for anybody in the class that was affected," Manning said, adding that the university is providing resources to all who had been impacted by the incident.

"The entire community is really concerned."

''The university said it is supporting the police investigation. It cancelled all Wednesday evening classes in Hagey Hall, which will remain closed until Thursday morning.

Students who were in the classroom recalled what had happened. Yusuk Kaymak said a guy walked in and asked the teacher if he was the professor, who answered yes.

The guy then pulled out a knife, "and after that, everybody just ran out," Kaymak said.''

"After we went outside, there was a kid that was stabbed. He was bleeding [from] his arm. I don't know what happened to the professor."

Another student, Jimmy Li, said the guy pulled two big knives from his backpack and attacked the professor.''

''The university says the stabbing occurred in Philosophy 202, which, according to the school website, focuses on “gender issues,” and the injured included two students and a professor.

The suspect, identified as a member of “the university community,” was taken into police custody.''

''University of Waterloo stabbing was hate-motivated related to gender identity, cops say

International student Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 24, faces charges''

''Police say a 24-year-old international University of Waterloo student has been charged in what they’re calling a hate-motivated triple stabbing during a gender studies class.''

Investigators believe the Wednesday afternoon attack was a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity.

A 38-year-old female professor, a 20-year-old female student and 19-year-old male student were sent to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the accused was found in the building after the stabbing and arrested.

He appeared in court for a bail hearing today''

''According to a profile on Facebook, Villalba-Aleman is from Quito, Ecuador and had just graduated in April with a bachelor’s degree in physics from the university.''

''Students are expected to gather for a moment of silence in the university’s arts quad this afternoon.''

It must have been so terrifying.

Police believe it was a hate crime.

“Investigators have reason to believe that this was a planned and targeted attack motivated by hate related to gender expression and gender identity,” Waterloo Regional Police Chief Mark Crowell said at a news conference Thursday.

Police said the suspect walked into the gender studies class of roughly 40 students, asked the 38-year-old professor for the subject of the class, then attacked her with two large knives.

As people tried to escape, he stabbed two students – a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman – and attempted to stab a another person, police alleged.

''KITCHENER — A 24-year-old man charged with stabbing two students and a professor in a gender studies class at the University of Waterloo last month remains in jail.

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman made a brief court appearance Tuesday from Maplehurst jail in Milton where he is in custody.

He returns to court on July 25.
Villalba-Aleman faces four counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and one count of mischief. Aggravated assault is defined as wounding, maiming, disfiguring or endangering life.''

''Federal prosecutors say the charges against a man accused of a triple stabbing targeting a gender studies class at the University of Waterloo amount to terrorism offences.''

''Dolhai provided the Ontario court of justice in Kitchener, Ont., with the attorney general’s consent to start terrorism proceedings against Villalba-Aleman on Friday morning.''

Villalba-Aleman is next scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 15

Wow he just graduated and has thrown his future away. I haven't seen an update on the victims. I hope they're ok. Maybe the suspect will plead guilty and the victims won't have to testify.

Physically, they are ok: "The stabbing victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries" (from the Toronto Sun link posted upthread).

''Victim impact statements were also heard during the hearing.

The University of Waterloo professor who was stabbed in her gender-studies class during last year’s attack said the incident has left her in a state of perpetual vigilance while teaching and stoked fears that others may be inspired to commit similar acts of violence on campus.

The professor, whose nose and arm were slashed, went on to lay out the emotional, physical and professional impact of the attack in a Kitchener courtroom Monday.

She described regularly waking up in tears in the immediate aftermath of the June 2023 stabbing, and worrying that she had not done enough to protect her students.''

''KITCHENER, Ont. — The man who stabbed three people in a University of Waterloo gender studies class last year expressed remorse for his crimes at the conclusion of his sentencing hearing Friday, but acknowledged that his apology may ring hollow to some.

"Even though I committed a violent attack, I still ... don't know what happened," Geovanny Villalba-Aleman told the court. "Right now, I don't know what's going (on) with my head. I still feel remorseful for what happened."

''Federal prosecutors have argued the offences amount to terrorism in this case because they were motivated by ideology and meant to intimidate the public. Provincial prosecutors argued that Villalba-Aleman was motivated by hatred toward members of the LGBTQ+ community and feminists. The defence rejected both arguments.''

''A mass stabbing at a University of Waterloo gender studies class was not a terrorist attack but a “particularly grave” hate crime meant to make people feel unsafe in those spaces, an Ontario judge ruled Monday in sentencing the attacker to 11 years in prison.

The judge sentencing Geovanny Villalba-Aleman told a Kitchener, Ont., court that the evidence in the case does not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that his hatred toward the LGBTQ+ community had crystallized into an ideology, which is one of the requirements for a finding of terrorism.''

'Geovanny Villalba-Aleman will serve more time in prison for stabbing three people at the University of Waterloo.

In March, a judge sentenced him to 11 years behind bars for the 2023 attack. Villalba-Aleman admitted he went into a gender studies class and stabbed two students and a professor. He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon. Villalba-Aleman also faced a terrorism charge but the judge decided to drop it as, she said, his beliefs were too “scattered and disparate” to be called an ideology.'

''Villalba-Aleman’s pre-sentencing was recalculated at 941 days.
He will spend 3,074 days, or a little more than eight years and four months, behind bars dating back to his sentencing hearing.''
