One after another it seems cold cases are getting solved through advances in DNA science. There must be a few criminals walking around on eggshells wondering if they’ll be next to be identified.

Calgary police say advances in DNA science identified the suspect

A man has been charged in a 30-year-old case that saw a masked intruder break into a southeast Calgary home and sexually assault a young mother who was alone with her toddler.

The intruder broke into the home in the southeast community of Southview on May 4, 1991, Calgary Police Service said in a release Friday morning.

After gaining access to the home, the offender attacked and sexually assaulted the woman before fleeing the scene.

Despite the assault being investigated extensively at the time, no suspect was identified.

Police say investigators continued to review the case over the years and, after advances in DNA science, identified a suspect.

"Forensic technology has advanced significantly since this sexual assault occurred," Staff Sgt. Michelle Doyle of the police sexual assault investigative unit said in the release.

"We never give up on these investigations, regardless of how much time has passed. Our investigators are dedicated to examining these cold cases to seek justice for victims of sexual assault."

On Wednesday, the team charged Thomas Craig Brodie, 48……”

I’m also curious what path he followed during all these years prior to this cowardly, disgusting act from his past catching up with him. You’re right, perhaps his known identity will solve additional crimes. The initial story ran with a photo, oddly it now seems to have been removed.

Suspect in Calgary cold-case rape pleads guilty | Calgary Herald
''In a victim-impact statement read in by Crown prosecutor Pam McCluskey, the woman, now in her late 50s, described the anguish that followed her brutal rape inside her home.''

“On May 4, 1991, I was sentenced to life for a crime I did not commit,” wrote the victim, whose identity is protected by a publication ban.

Thomas Craig Brodie, now 49 but only 18 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter into the woman’s home and committing a sexual assault.''

McCluskey said the investigation went cold for decades before sex-crime detectives Trish Allen and Michelle Moffat, using DNA technology and investigative genetic genealogy techniques, were able to identify Brodie as the perpetrator.

When arrested, Brodie confessed, saying he was walking home from a strip club when he saw the victim in the window and attacked her.''

''Thomas Brodie apologized to his victim on Wednesday and said he was a "lost and broken 18-year-old" when he broke into the woman's home and raped her while high and drunk more than three decades ago.

Brodie's crimes took place in 1991.

He was arrested 30 years after the assault by cold case detectives Michelle Moffatt and Trish Allan, who reopened the investigation using advances in DNA technology and then genetic genealogy analysis to track down relatives of the offender.

Last December, Brodie pleaded guilty to break and enter to commit a sexual assault.

On Wednesday, Brodie's sentencing hearing took place as lawyers argued how much time the now 49-year-old should spend in prison.

Prosecutor Pam McCluskey proposed a seven-year prison sentence while defence lawyer Elena Ryland asked the judge to consider a five-year term.

Provincial court Judge Allan Fradsham said in court that he needs time to consider his decision.

Brodie was allowed to address the court as part of his sentencing hearing and apologized to his victim, his family and. the police. He expressed shame and remorse for his "despicable" crime.''
