Coquitlam man missing in area popular with hikers
A Coquitlam man is missing in an area popular with hikers on the top of Westwood Plateau along a network of trails that are making a search for him extremely difficult.

Ali Safar Naderi was reported missing just before 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23 when his vehicle was found in the 2100 block of Diamond Crescent, Coquitlam.''

''Naderi is known to hike alone in that area almost daily. However, a concerned citizen called police after observing that Naderi’s vehicle had been parked many hours longer than usual.''

''Because the area has so many trails, some of which lead to Eagle Mountain, it’s not known where Maderi was headed, and without pin pointing the area for his hike, it’s difficult to mount a search, McLaughlin said.''

''Naderi is described as:

• A 52-year-old Persian man,

• With brown eyes,

• Black, salt and pepper hair of medium length,

•178 cm (5’10) and 80 kg (176 lbs),

• May be wearing hiking gear.

Anyone who has seen Naderi or who may have information about his whereabouts, should contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2020-22677.''

Tips from the public help police narrow down search for missing hiker in Coquitlam, B.C.
"We've had some crucial information come in from ordinary citizens who are alert, giving us a place to focus our investigation," McLaughlin told reporters.

"It's very important that people give our search and rescue workers the space they need to work. Don't come to this location, don't contaminate the trail."

Search and rescue manager Ray Nordstrand said Naderi appears to have gone much farther north than previously believed.

no evidence of foul play. Instead, the evidence is pointing to a hiker who entered the backcountry missing essential equipment and without a plan shared with others.

UPDATE: Search halted for missing Coquitlam man as rescuers 'regroup and refocus'

Search and Rescue teams and Coquitlam RCMP have suspended a multi-day search for a missing man last seen hiking on Eagle Mountain.

Snip

In a Tweet early Thursday, Aug. 27, Coquitlam Search and Rescue said it would not be actively searching for Naderi on Eagle Ridge today, and instead, search and rescue managers and the RCMP would “review the task so far and plan for next steps.

We are planning on going back out,” said Coquitlam Search and Rescue president Tom Zajac. “It’s more of a regroup and refocus, see if there are any areas we’ve missed or where we need to focus our efforts.”

I really don't understand why they aren't deploying drones. They can cover so much in such a short period of time. Infared ones too. Wings of Mercy is HQed in Canada as well - B.C. I think.

''Tips from the public and trail camera footage of Naderi have helped search and rescue workers make progress, but RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says Coquitlam Search and Rescue crews need time off to refocus.

"This has been a really intense search, not just for our local search and rescuers but for all the other resources from other jurisdictions called in," McLaughlin said.

"Although we've made progress, we haven't made the progress we really want, which is to find him. That's why we're taking these two days to let the rescuers recover their energy and go back with a new plan."
'Search and rescue workers will take the next two days to rest, McLaughlin said.''

WTH?! Take two days off?! That's crazy. Time is ticking if they want any chance to find him alive. He went missing on the 23rd; he could still be alive. GET GOING!

I came across an interesting article from National Geographic that talks about people who are lost walk in circles. A good read. The article is too large to upload. Here's the link but to view the article you have to provide your email. I did because I find their articles super interesting. Regardless, the bottom line is that lost people walk in circles!

Do lost people really go round in circles?

From the cam trail image they have his location and the direction he was traveling. I presume that's where they zeroed in to search for him. Trouble is that image was a few days old and who knows how far or what turns he could have made in the meantime. And of course, the terrain makes the possibility of a fall a serious contender. JMO

@rosesfromangels that's an interesting article. I wonder if the trail he was hiking make that possible, if there is any kind of circular route that he could stay on. It's been almost a week and hope is growing dim for me that he will be found safe. :(

The 2 days searchers have taken off worries me. It makes me think they no longer feel he’s alive, so it’s more a recovery mission. I’m not sure what they would base that on. They don’t seem as urgent as before. I wonder if they have found something that points them in that direction? All JMO, of course.

The article below says LE has already theorized he wasn't prepared for a hike. I suppose he usually leaves a plan w/ others and he must have left equip behind. If that's the case, I don't understand how they're not more concerned given he deviated from his normal routine.

RCMP tells Instagram users to back off Coquitlam SAR in case of missing hiker

Coquitlam RCMP is calling on social media users to back off after several people on Instagram targeted Coquitlam Search and Rescue’s account in a campaign to restart the search for a missing hiker.

Roughly 600 people have liked an Aug. 25 post by the local search and rescue outfit describing how “the search continues for Ali Safar Naderi on Eagle Mountain.” Since then, search and rescue teams have halted their operations and hundreds of identical posts from multiple accounts have implored the volunteer rescue group to continue looking for the missing Coquitlam man.

Snip

Should more information point to Naderi’s location, “a search could resume based on those specific tips,” according to police.

i really wish the RCMP shared where/how that photo (in post #2) was taken; looks like a trailcam maybe? was it far out in the woods outside his usual path and thats how they know he went into the backcountry? first i was thinking he might have mentioned to friends that he was taking a new, deeper route but then RCMP said he didnt have a 'plan shared with others'.
Also, im with the public on this one, i DO NOT understand why they completely called off the search after only a week and said it wasn't worth it anymore, this guy seems healthy and resourceful. Even if they didn't have the funds anymore they could have continued some efforts (like with drones or free searches by volunteers), right? I'd love some more information and disclosure from local police.

''The public responded to calls for information with dozens of tips and one individual provided an image of Naderi captured on a trail cam.

In the end, Coquitlam Search and Rescue brought in 183 trained volunteers who carried out 2,400 hours of searching. Teams used drones, helicopters and search dogs as they scoured 48,000 square metres of trail but “each extra day of searching included entering riskier terrain with less certainty that they were looking in the right direction,” wrote Cpl. McLaughlin in the release.''

''Police describe Naderi as a 52-year-old Persian man with brown eyes and black, salt and pepper hair that curls over his ears. At 178 centimetres (5’10) and 80 kilograms (176 pounds), he was last seen wearing dark-coloured shorts, a dark-coloured, lightweight hiking jacket and carrying hiking poles.

If you have seen Naderi, or may have information about his whereabouts, please contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2020-22677.''
