Circumstances of Disappearance
Alvin Clifford Berg, originally from the Pierceland District, was working as a farm laborer in the Spinney Hill District near Maymont. He left the farm in August of 1940 and has not been seen nor heard from since.

Alvin Clifford Berg missing since 1940

The Regina RCMP Historical Case Unit continues to investigate the disappearance in 1940 of Alvin Clifford Berg...

Berg was originally from the Pierceland area, but he had been working as a farm labourer in the Spinney Hill District, near Sonningdale and Maymont.

In the fall of 1940, after the harvest, Berg left his half-brother's farm intending to catch the bus in Maymont. He was never seen or heard from again.

Investigators do not believe he made it to Maymont or caught the bus.

The police are interested in speaking with anyone who may have known or worked with Berg in an attempt to learn more about him and his disappearance.

Berg, who was about 40, was 5-foot-9, weighed 165 pounds and had short dark hair.

The RCMP is looking for anyone who may have aerial, farm and/or personal photographs or maps of the Sonningdale, Spinney Hill, or Maymont areas taken in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

In 1940, Canada was sending military asstance to Great Britain. This was at the beginning of WW II.

Could Alvin have enlisted in the Canadian armed forces, perhaps under an assumed name?

1940 was something of a banner year for Canada's entry into World War 2. Canada had declared war on Germany in September 1939, and began an all-out war assistance and recruitment drive to build up its small armed forces. The Battle of Britain took place with Germany bombing British cities throughout the summer of 1940. This was in the news throughout Canada.

At age 35 (?) Alvin would have been at the upper age limit for enlistment, but perhaps after finishing with the harvest chores, he might have enlisted in the Canadian army. Some Canadian units arrived in France just about the fall of Dunkirk. Other units were shipped to Hong Kong to support UK forces. Other units saw action in Europe during the war.

From a previous post:

He very likely had just received his pay from the farmer. Perhaps another farm worker knew he had money and followed him as he left the farm or offered him a ride? If that was the case, he might be buried somewhere close to the farm on the road to Maymount.
