I am going to guess that they got into an arguement in the house and ran out to leave which would explain the bare feet.
She ran to the back yard perhaps to go to the garage to her car??? I would have to see a diagram of the house and yard....
but I am thinking she ran out and he grabbed her and the fight was on. There was the hatchet in the stump and he grabbed it and killed her. Dragged her to her car and put her in the back seat.

Horrible horrible domestic murder.
