Demers' partner, 47-year-old Victor Poirier, was arrested on Friday

Police in Québec City are continuing their search for a 46-year-old woman who disappeared two weekends ago. Chantal Demers was last seen in the Lac-St-Charles area in the north of the city.

She hasn't been seen since May 3.

Demers' partner, 47-year-old Victor Poirier was arrested on Friday and charged with assault causing bodily harm for offences allegedly committed in April.

Quebec City police have confirmed that a body found in a wooded area in the Portneuf region is that of Chantal Demers, a 46-year-old woman who disappeared May 3.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

She was found near the place Poirier was arrested.

RIP Chantal.

Poirier has been in custody since May. Since that time, four other women have filed complaints against him.

In total, he now faces 17 charges including sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and harassment.

Victor Poirier was initially charged with first degree murder. The Crown and the defense have finally come to an agreement on a new charge of manslaughter.

The prosecutor, Eric Beauséjour, explains that the first degree murder charge was dropped because the autopsy performed on the victim's body did not allow to determine the exact cause of his death.

Victor Poirier's lawyer maintains that his client never intended to kill Chantal Demers, even though he was responsible for the death of his partner.

Me Julien Grégoire recognizes that the sentence is important. He mentions that Victor Poirier's past and the fact that he moved the victim's body to hide it weighed in the balance.
