Women shouted, sobbed and in one case had to be hauled from the courtroom by sheriffs after former Edmonton nightclub promoter and convicted rapist Matthew McKnight was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday.

Justice Doreen Sulyma delivered her decision Friday afternoon in front of a packed courtroom. As it became clear she was siding with the defence on several key issues, a group of women including at least one of McKnight’s five victims — as well as other women who made complaints against him — stood and linked arms.

8 years is a slap on the wrist for this guy, IMO. He operated as a predator for years and several of these attacks were violent as well as coercive. Bemused by some of the judge’s conduct during trial and reasoning for the various deductions and wonder if the crown will appeal.
