Case

Desiree Oldwoman (Born December 5, 1990) is a young woman who was last seen walking away from her grandmother's residence at 8:30 P.M. on the Siksika Nation. She is known to wander around, but has never left at night and usually goes to a neighbours' or relatives' house.

“Desiree is autistic and non-verbal. It is believed she left her residence sometime during the night and wandered off,” police said.

“Due to proximity of her residence to Highway 901, she may have been walking on the highway that night or in the early morning of Aug. 28, 2011.”

In the 10 years since, several searches have been done in the area around her home, and investigators have received many tips about the case, but haven’t been able to find her, or determine what led to her disappearance.

Police said when Oldwoman was last seen, she was wearing a brown sweater and black track pants with a red stripe, and wasn’t wearing shoes.

She’s described as being 5’4″ tall, weighed about 165 pounds and had short brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Gleichen RCMP at 403-734-3923, or to contact Crime Stoppers.

RCMP appeal to public for answers of what happened to Siksika woman who went missing 10 years ago

A 10-year-old missing person case involving a young Alberta woman with autism has RCMP reminding the public to send any information they may have.

Desiree Oldwoman, 21, was last seen at around 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2011, at her home on the Siksika First Nation in southern Alberta, according to a news release issued Friday.

Gleichen RCMP say Oldwoman is autistic and non-verbal but is able to write her name.

"There is not a day that goes by that we do not think of Desiree and her return home. She is special, beautiful, wonderfully curious, and we miss her dearly," said Oldwoman's family in the release.

"Family and friends continue to pray that she will be found, and that justice will be achieved. We plea to the public that if you have any information about her disappearance, you must report it to the Gleichen RCMP immediately. We need your help to find her and bring her home. We must find her."

During the night of her disappearance, it is believed she wandered away from her residence to Highway 901, which extends Highway 22X from Highway 24 to Highway 1 near Gleichen.

RCMP say she may have walked on the highway either that night or in the early morning of Aug. 28, 2011.

Several search efforts that covered air, land and water were conducted in the area.

Tips were also reported to police over the years, but officers have not been able to determine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Recently, an "aged composite" image of Desiree has been developed of what she may look like today. She would now be 31 years old.

According to a release, she is Indigenous, five-foot-four and 165 pounds with short brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a brown sweater and black track pants with a red stripe. She was not wearing shoes.

She is also known to be drawn to fragrances, such as perfume and air fresheners, and has a love for plush animals.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or identifying those responsible can call Gleichen RCMP at 403-734-3923 or call your local police. Tips can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

<<"One morning my mom, Desiree's guardian, was ready for breakfast. Someone had gone to grab Desiree, and she wasn't there," said Cherie Spotted Eagle, Desiree's aunt.

Desiree's family believes that she went missing near the M&R gas station on Highway 901. According to Spotted Eagle, Desiree's belongings were discovered near the Bow River by the RCMP a few days after she was last seen. Among the belongings were her sweater and her shoes.>>

<<Although Desiree's family has been thankful for the support of groups helping in the search, Spotted Eagle said she was disappointed by the response of the RCMP. According to her, they were not told about Desiree's belongings being located until years after they were found.

"I don't want to get political or offend anybody, but that's just the way it is," said Spotted Eagle. "It was a very botched investigation. Why didn't they tell us when they first found it?">>
