Mary Jane Kasyon says her cousin, Ernestine Kasyon, 26, was kind to others. On Dec. 6, 1989, Ernestine walked from a home in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to a pay phone, and has not been seen since then. The Prince Albert Police Service is investigating the missing persons case, and according to Kasyon, officers last contacted the family around 2009.

Mary Jane Kasyon remembers her cousin, Ernestine Kasyon as a happy-go-lucky girl; someone who was kind to others.

“I know she looked after herself,” Kasyon said.

“[She] always dressed nicely.”

On Dec. 6, 1989 Ernestine, 26, walked from a home in Prince Albert, Sask. to a pay phone.

“She was gone for a long time so my cousin, George went to check... Her purse was sitting on the ground and the phone was dangling,” Kasyon said.

In Saskatchewan, Ernestine moved from Stony Rapids, where she was born and raised, to Prince Albert, where she lived before she vanished. Her indigenous roots were in Black Lake First Nation, and Kasyon told the CBC Ernestine’s skull is buried there.

“I know about six years ago [around 2009] they found a skull and through dental records, they found her skull, which is buried here in Black Lake,” she said.

“The rest of the body is not found, and she is still considered missing.”

Members of the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) say they are investigating Kasyon's case as a missing persons case, and would not confirm whether Ernestine’s skull was found, or if it is buried on the First Nation.

According to Kasyon, Ernestine was living with a lawyer, and her marriage ended before she disappeared. Ernestine may have struggled with drugs and alcohol, and Kasyon is certain her cousin felt isolated.

Kasyon questions whether the PAPS investigated the lawyer, and others who were in Ernestine’s life before she vanished.

“I think [the PAPS] could have put more effort into [the investigation],” she said.

“They never even tried to contact us or ask us any information... Nothing whatsoever.”

Although the PAPS consider Ernestine Kasyon a historical case, hundreds in Saskatchewan uphold her memory in the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) Women’s Commission Honouring our Sisters and Brothers memorial walk, which happens annually in May.

The first walk took place in 2005, and according to the PAGC Women’s Commission’s chair, Shirley Henderson, it was prompted by an Amnesty International report on murdered indigenous women in Saskatchewan.

Kasyon says a federal inquiry into Canada’s missing and murdered indigenous girls and women might reveal what happened to Ernestine, and provide clarity on whether her cousin’s indigenous identity influenced the way officers handled the case.

“If it’s a non-native woman they sure find out [who’s responsible] in no time,” she said.

“They search and search and search until they find someone.”
