No way. This went down like the heist years ago in Boston. The Isabella Stewart Gardner collection. Big stuff.

Weird I'm pretty sure a film about just came out or is coming out on Netflix. "This Is A Heist" or "This Is A Robbery".

''Desperate for answers about the theft of her 2 paintings, a Czech artist seeks out and befriends the career criminal who stole them. After inviting her thief to sit for a portrait, the two form an improbable relationship and an inextricable bond that will forever link these lonely souls.''

Oh @dotr good stuff. Especially "This Is A Robbery". Only recalled it was Boston as my ex husband thought it was brilliant. Yep he enjoyed anything wild that involved a heist.

Meanwhile we then wouldn't have known a Manet from a Monet. Cool how we now can perhaps solve the mystery heist.

Because it was so specific, i'm thinking they had a buyer. Not like they can pawn it. Plus I am sure there was other stuff in display. Wonder who the artist it was. Just thinking out loud

Someone robbed a Toronto gallery and got away with nearly $300k worth of art
Becky Robertson
''In a heist that seems more like something out of a movie than something that actually happens in your home city, an independent contemporary gallery in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood has been robbed of nearly $300,000 worth of fine art.

Perhaps inspired by the new Netflix release This is a Robbery, three perpetrators broke into the swanky Galerie de Bellefeuille on Avenue Road just north of Bloor at around midnight on Monday.''

''The items include a crystal-encrusted Buddha statue and an elephant sculpture with some Warhol-esque soup cans and other painted detailing, both from the same artist, Metis Atash of Germany.

Also stolen were U.K.-based Sophie Ryder's imposing and mythical life-sized piece "Lovers on Horseback," and one of a series of the androgynous bronze figures that Dutch sculptor Hanneke Beaumont is known for.''

Oh just did some Art Appreciation 101 as @dotr has posted. Thank you.

One similarity is that the artists are females? The "Punk Buddhas" are very cool. Then really brazen they hoisted a life size statue of mythical lovers on a horse?

@ms_x_to_the_m yep there's got to be a buyer. Can you imagine going into a pawn shop? "How much can I get on this Swarovski crystal elephant?". Then they stick it in the window.

these crimes fascinate me because I always think, why would a buyer take that risk?

I’m sorry but... why?? What are they planning on doing with them? The Toronto art scene & buyers market is small and everyone will recognize these now.
