Historian aims to shed light on nearly 60-year-old Aurora cold case

''Nearly 60 years ago, students at a local independent school found Geraldine Pickford choked to death on the banks of Tannery Creek.
Pickford, 40, had spent four months working as a server at St. Andrew’s College before her murder, and despite considerable publicity, the person responsible for her death was never found.
But local historian David Heard aims to rekindle the cold case next Thursday, October 19, at 7 p.m. with a Gathering and Candlelight Walk, beginning at Machell Park, in Pickford’s memory.
“The 40-year-old was discovered by a group of students on September 20, 1965, at the all-boys boarding school,” says the York Regional Police. “At the time, the creek ran through the college grounds near the rugby and cricket fields. She was found completely nude, her clothes strewn about nearby among pieces of garbage. Working as a server in the college’s dining areas, Geraldine would clock in and clock out repeatedly throughout the day, as boys came and went to eat their meals. After clocking out for the last time and leaving the women’s quarters just after 9 p.m. on September 19, Geraldine was never seen alive again.”
York Regional Police have kept the case open, providing an online hub of information available on the murder, encouraging tips that might help identify the killer.''

Cruising around the internet a while back, I happened upon The Cold Cases of York Region, a site set up by the York Region police.

''Geraldine Pickford was a slight, red-headed 40-year-old waitress at St. Andrew’s College, the prestigious Aurora boys’ school. Her naked body was found by a group of students beside Tannery Creek on the school property at 10 p.m. on Sept. 19, 1965.
Sometime between 9:30 and 11 p.m. the evening before she had been beaten about the face and strangled.
She had not been sexually assaulted, and there was no evidence that she had been robbed.''

''Who was she?
I was sent to find out.
There wasn’t much to go on. She had one brother, an airline pilot named William Devine, who lived in Montreal.
He had last seen her at her wedding in 1962.

“We weren’t close,” he told me.
There was Joseph Pickford, her estranged husband, a male nurse at Toronto’s Dew-son Street Private Hospital, who claimed not to have seen her recently, but clearly kept tabs on her.
There was her boss at St. Andrew’s, Norman Stewart, who described Pickford as “the most insignificant person who ever worked here.”
And there was her best, and seemingly only friend, Margo Iula, who had an interesting backstory on Pickford, concluding “she sought love but always fouled up.”
It was Stewart’s cruel comment about Pickford’s insignificance that bothered me then, and bothers me now.
No life is insignificant.
Geraldine Pickford’s life was significant enough for someone to take it from her.
To this day I regret we don’t know who.''
