4/10/24 Update: B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lance Bernard denies bid to toss Ali murder verdict for court delays. He gave his decision from the bench Thursday morning, saying his reasons would follow at a later date. Ali's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, 4/16/24 when dates will be set for his sentencing. Ali is facing a mandatory life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. His lawyers have already filed an appeal.
4/16/24 update: Hearing held. Defense lawyer Kevin Mccollough for Ali, who was convicted of first-degree murder of a 13-year-old girl in Burnaby, B.C., says the man wants to appear at his sentencing hearing by video over fear for his safety. McCollough told a B.C. Supreme Court judge that Ali's attendance in person poses "real safety issues" & he's prepared to file additional affidavits to support the defence position. Prosecutor Isobel Keeley said the Crown is opposed to Ali attending his sentencing remotely & the Criminal Code indicates such an appearance should be in person unless the defence & Crown agree on an alternative with the court's approval. The judge told the defence lawyer to stop speaking, saying the court would deal with the matter of Ali’s sentencing appearance at a later date. Hearing set on 4/19/24 to set to confirm sentencing date.

''Prosecutor Isobel Keeley says the Crown is opposed to Ali attending his sentencing remotely, and the Criminal Code indicates such an appearance should be in person unless the defence and Crown agree on an alternative with the court’s approval.

Keeley says members of the murdered girl’s family will be travelling from China to attend, and she expects they will deliver three separate victim impact statements.

She says one of those will be a video recording from the victim’s father reading his statement in Mandarin, with a translated copy to be read aloud in English.

Another hearing is scheduled Friday to confirm the sentencing dates.''

June 7 and 10 have been set for the sentencing of Ibrahim Ali, the man found guilty of sexually assaulting and murdering a 13-year-old girl found dead in Central Park in 2017.
.....
Ali now faces a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

At a hearing in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver Friday, the court set aside two days for his sentencing: June 7 and 10.

But the hearing is expected to take only one day, according to Justice Lance Bernard.

The Crown had intended to set dates as early as the end of April, but the sentencing had to be pushed back because of interpreter availability.
Ali's lawyer, Kevin McCullough, requested earlier this week that Ali be allowed to attend his sentencing remotely for safety reasons.

[.....]
Bernard said he would make a ruling on the issue before the sentencing hearing.

''VANCOUVER — A man convicted of murdering a 13-year-old Burnaby, B.C., girl has repeatedly told a pre-sentencing hearing that he didn’t kill her, after refusing to listen to his interpreter during an impact statement by the girl’s father.''

Ali told Bernard in broken English that listening to the girl’s father was “a no from me,” saying he “did not kill” the man’s daughter and was not in Burnaby’s Central Park the day she was murdered.''

''Ali’s DNA matched semen found in the body of the girl
, who can’t be named because of a publication ban.''

''Ibrahim Ali sentenced to life in prison

File # 2017-1024
Ibrahim Ali sentenced to life in prison.

Background:

On July 19, 2017, the city of Burnaby was shaken, after the body of a 13-year old girl, was found deceased in Central Park. The victim had been reported missing less than two hours prior from her home in Burnaby. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and continued to work closely with the Burnaby RCMP, supported by the BC RCMP’s Integrated Teams and policing resources from all over the Lower Mainland.''

Here's another article.

The murder of a 13-year-old girl found dead in a Burnaby park nearly seven years ago dropped like a "mountain" on the shoulders of her family, her father told the court at her killer’s sentencing hearing this week.
[.....]
The girl’s brother told the court their mother has been "utterly destroyed by grief" and he is plagued by regret and shame that his last text exchange with his sister was “dismissive.”
[.....]
Ibrahim Ali, 34, was sentenced Friday after a jury found him guilty in December of first-degree murder in the girl’s death.
[.....]
After the victim impact statements and remarks from Ali, Justice Lance Bernard delivered his sentence.

"Mr. Ali, you have been found guilty of first-degree murder, and you have heard the profound harm and grief you have caused for raping and murdering 13-year-old (name redacted) in Central Park on July 18, 2017," he said. "For this horrific and most grave crime I hereby sentence you to imprisonment in a penitentiary for life without eligibility for parole for 25 years."

With one day of credit for each day spent in pretrial custody since his arrest in September 2018, Ali won't be eligible for parole until 2043.

He will remain on the national sex offender registry for life and must provide a DNA sample.

He will also be banned from possessing any weapons for 10 years after his release.

So... guessing NO court date on Monday, 6/10? They did say it would take 2 days - but it looks like they wrapped up everything on Friday.

Any news on that date - 6/10? TIA if anyone can find something - otherwise this case goes on my "done" shelf.

This looks like the last of it, imo. If anything new pops up, will post a link.

''Amidst the legal proceedings, the girl’s brother painted a picture of a family shattered beyond repair, with a mother described as “utterly destroyed.”

Instead of apologizing Ali maintained his innocence to the court, insisting he was not present at the scene where the girl’s body was discovered in Burnaby’s Central Park.''

I wonder what's the deal with the gloves. They are exactly what I imagine a rapist/killer would wear.

The artist did a great job.
