''A Winnipeg family is asking for help to find their missing teenage son whom they haven't seen since he left for school in the Fort Richmond area last Wednesday morning.

Winnipeg police say Inuka Gunathilaka was last seen on May 24.

Inuka's family say the last time they saw their 16-year-old son was when he left for school that morning.

"If someone knows about Inuka, please inform us. We want Inuka to come home," the boy's father Nishantha Gunathilaka told CTV News.

He said Inuka was seen at Fort Richmond Collegiate around 8:11 a.m. that day. He dropped some books at the library and then left a few minutes later heading towards Pembina Highway.

The family has shared security pictures and videos with CTV News which show Inuka visiting a 7/11 and Tim Hortons that morning in the area.

The community has been searching for Inuka tirelessly since Wednesday. The search group said they have tracked him up Pembina Highway from Killarney Avenue to Thatcher Drive.

But after that the video trail stops.

Inuka’s parents are desperate for any information that might lead to finding their son.

"My son, please come home," Inuka's mother Nilanka Gadaba said.

The Winnipeg police service's missing persons unit is investigating. The Pembina Trails School Division also sent out a bulletin to parents, asking anyone who has information to call police.

Inuka's classmates have been asking people to share posts about this case so as many people as possible can keep an eye out for him.

On Tuesday morning, Inuka's family and friends are planning to hold an event outside the Victoria Hospital asking for any dash cam footage from that route that could provide new details on his movements last Wednesday.''

''Family and friends searching for a missing 15-year-old boy in south Winnipeg urge drivers to check dashcam footage and businesses to look through security cameras for any sign of Inuka Gunathilaka.

It's been nearly a week since the teen was last seen in the Fort Richmond neighbourhood.

"The whole family's devastated. We want to know where he is," said Anuradha Kariyawasam, who described himself as one of spokespeople for Gunathilaka's family.

Kariyawasam and several others stood Tuesday morning on the boulevard on Pembina Highway near Markham Road, not far from Gunathilaka's last known location on May 24.

They held a banner with Gunathilaka's photo and a message for people to call police if they see any sign of him.''

Udaya Annakkage, Gunathilaka's Sunday school teacher, told CBC News the teen is seen on surveillance footage at 8:11 a.m. going into his school library at Fort Richmond Collegiate.

For some reason, he then left the school and is next seen at 8:24 a.m. at Tim Hortons at Killarney Avenue and Pembina.

The next time he is seen is at 8:53 a.m., walking past the Markham Chiropractic Centre at Pembina and Thatcher Drive.

"Beyond that, there's no evidence," Annakkage said.

Gunathilaka doesn't have a cellphone and his parents believe he only had $20, Annakkage said.

"This is very unusual. He's a very reserved person, [he] doesn't have many friends," he said, describing Gunathilaka as someone who doesn't socialize or go out much at all.''

Search for teen ends after body found

The search for a missing Fort Richmond teen was suspended after his family said police had found a body.

Winnipeg police contacted Sethumi Gunathilaka Wednesday morning to notify her that a body had been found, and it may be that of her brother Inuka Gunathilaka, she told the Free Press.

Inuka, 15, has been missing since May 24.

The family is awaiting forensic identification of the body and has suspended the search, she said.

The Winnipeg Police Service would not confirm whether a body had been found.

“We cannot (confirm this). We’re just talking with the missing person’s unit, so we don’t have any further information to provide,” WPS Const. Claude Chancy said.

Inuka was last seen at 8 a.m. as he left home for school.

Footage from surveillance cameras shows him arriving at Fort Richmond Collegiate 10 minutes later. He left his school supplies in the library and walked out of the school toward Pembina Highway,

Video later shows him walking northbound near University Crescent.

“Everybody is shocked. Everybody involved in this was determined to find him,” said Udaya Annakkage, who helped organize the search.

Annakkage said he was present when police delivered the news to the family.

“I arrived half-way through. I heard first-hand from the police,” he said by phone.

Annakkage said the body was found along the Red River, near a business in the Crescent Park neighbourhood.

“Until we get a firm, official statement from police, we don’t know if this is Inuka. This is difficult for us too because our community needs closure, and you can’t get closure until you hear confirmation,” he said.

The Gunathilakas are members of the close-knit Sri Lankan community in Winnipeg. Annakkage taught both Sethumi and Inuka at Sunday school, he said.

“(Inuka) is a very kind, but very quiet kid,” he said.

The search for the teen, which involved hundreds of local Sri Lankans, began last week and continued into Tuesday, Annakkage said.
