'Police say John Edwards was reported missing from St. Joseph’s Villa, a retirement home in Dundas, Ont., on June 11. Officials say Edwards lives with cognitive impairments that are comparable to dementia and, as a result, are growing “increasingly concerned” for his safety.

Investigators say they have explored numerous tips since Edwards’s disappearance, including collecting footage and reviewing potential sightings. They add that many of those tips have been ruled out.

Police say the last confirmed sighting placed Edwards in the area of Milgrove Side Road, walking south from Highway 6, shortly after 4 p.m. on the day he was reported missing. Video captured Edwards walking west on Concession 5 West, heading toward Carey Road, just a few minutes later.

On either June 20 or June 21, around 11 a.m., police say a man resembling Edwards was seen walking east along the pipeline between Bennett Boulevard and Thompson Road South in Milton.'

"Police are continuing to appeal to the public and businesses as Mr. Edwards' movements appear erratic and unpredictable, with no discernible pattern. He is not carrying a cell phone, money, or any means of identification or tracking, making it difficult to pinpoint his whereabouts without public assistance. At this time, there is nothing to indicate foul play; however, the recent heat wave makes Mr. Edwards’ situation even more urgent and concerning.

Anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage is asked to review the following dates and locations for possible sightings:
  • Concession 5 W between Milgrove Side Road and Brock Road, Flamborough on June 11 after 4:00 p.m.
  • Pipeline trail between Bennett Blvd and Thompson Rd South, MiltonJune 20 or 21 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Description:
  • White male
  • 62 years old
  • 5’11”, approx. 214 lbs
  • Shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes
  • Walks with a slight shuffle
  • May be carrying a small, light-coloured ball in his hand
  • Last seen wearing baggy shorts, a striped blue T-shirt, white socks, running shoes, and possibly a ball cap
If you have any information that may assist, please contact the Hamilton Police Service Div 30 S/Sgt 905-546-3886 or the Missing Person Unit 905-540-8549 or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Every detail matters in helping us bring Mr. Edwards home safely.''

HEY, LET'S ESTABLISH FACTS FIRST:

Who:

John Edwards, 62-year-old male, cognitive impairments similar to dementia.
Physical Description:
  • 5’11”
  • ~214 lbs
  • Shoulder-length brown hair, brown eyes
  • Walks with slight shuffle
  • May carry a small light-coloured ball in his hand
  • Clothing: baggy shorts, striped blue T-shirt, white socks, running shoes, possibly ball cap
Timeline of Sightings:

June 11 (last confirmed):

  • After 4:00 p.m.: Milgrove Side Road, walking south from Highway 6.
  • Minutes later: Concession 5 West, heading toward Carey Road.
  • June 20 or 21 (unconfirmed sighting):

~11:00 a.m.: Milton area, walking east along pipeline trail between Bennett Blvd and Thompson Rd South.

Well I see certain key points, he had:
  • No cellphone, money, ID, or tracking devices.
  • Erratic, unpredictable movement — no clear pattern.
  • The recent heat wave increases urgency.
  • Police believe no foul play currently suspected.

Also the areas of sighting:

  • Flamborough area (initial sighting)
  • Milton area (possible later sighting)
  • Pipeline trails, rural areas

Now I have some possible theories:

  • Disoriented wandering common with dementia, he may have walked a significant distance, following trails or roads.
  • Milton is approx 40 km from initial Dundas sighting, may suggest hitchhiking, assistance from stranger, or long-term wandering.
  • Given cognitive impairment, he may be seeking familiar places, water sources, shelter, or even trying to “return” somewhere that only makes sense to him.

What I would suggest is:

  • Review rural surveillance footage along likely pathways between Dundas and Milton.
  • Canvass gas stations, convenience stores, churches, or shelters that might offer help to a confused individual.
  • Search shaded areas, trails, culverts, barns, or any outdoor shelter given the heat wave.

''Yesterday, a search manager along with officers conducted a ground search in the area surrounding Millgrove United Church until dusk. Unfortunately, no new evidence was located. The terrain remains particularly difficult — with large properties, dense brush, and marshy areas that are largely inaccessible by foot without specialized equipment.

In light of these challenges, police will re-establish a command post today at Millgrove United Church to support ongoing search operations. A coordinated effort will continue today with assistance from a Search Manager.

Today’s search efforts include:

  • Deployment of drones (RPAS) for aerial surveillance
  • ATV units to cover rough terrain
  • Mounted Patrol to assist with hard-to-reach wooded areas
  • Marine Unit support, primarily for access to specialized gear for navigating marshlands
Police are also actively investigating two very recent community tips reporting someone resembling the missing individual walking in the Upper Paradise area on Hamilton and Mohawk Road West and Upper horning. Both sightings are under review and being followed up by investigators.

To date, the extensive search efforts have included:

  • Immediate deployment of search teams in Dundas and Flamborough (2 command posts)
  • Public Order Unit and Ground Search and Rescue personnel
  • FLIR thermal imaging and aerial support
  • Patrols by foot, bike, and mounted officers, canine, special constables, cadets and now Marine Unit
  • Review of surveillance footage and video canvassing
  • Investigation of numerous tips, including an unconfirmed sighting in Milton
Key Facts:

  • Edwards is believed to be without a phone, ID, or money
  • His travel path has been unpredictable and difficult to trace
  • He is considered cognitively vulnerable, and recent extreme heat adds to concerns for his safety
  • There is currently no indication of foul play, but the situation remains urgent and deeply concerning
Hamilton Police continue to ask residents—particularly in rural Flamborough, Dundas and West Mountain areas—to check their properties, outbuildings, and trail cameras. Anyone with information or possible sightings is urged to contact the Missing Person Unit at 905-540-8549 or Division 30 Criminal Investigations Branch at 905-546-3886 immediately. We sincerely thank the community for their continued support, vigilance, and the tips shared so far. Your efforts remain vital in helping us bring this vulnerable man home safely''
