''Around 3:30 p.m. PT that day, police say, a man knocked on the door of the daycare and asked for the five-year-old girl by name, claiming to be her father.

The girl was out of the house with daycare staff at the time, according to police, who said the man then left after making a comment "about calling the nanny." After talking to the girl's parents about the encounter, staff immediately reported the man to police, the statement said.

"We've confirmed that neither of the girl's parents had come to pick her up that afternoon, and that nobody else should have been aware of the child-care arrangement," said VPD Sgt. Steve Addison in the statement.

He said the man's identity "is still a mystery," despite police investigating the case for three weeks.''

''Investigators on Friday released a composite sketch of the man believed to be involved on Dec. 13.
They also posted a photo of a vehicle that was seen in the area. The car, an orange Porsche Macan, is not linked to the case but police say the driver may be able to help with the investigation.''

''Police say the suspect is believed to be white and in his 30s, about six-feet-tall with a medium build. He had facial stubble and was wearing a white toque with a white hooded sweatshirt when he approached the daycare.
He was described to police as appearing clean and stylish.''

This sort of thing is the stuff of nightmares. It sounds like the daycare did all the right things, but I wonder what the outcome would have been if she was present (not out with staff) at the time. I could see the situation becoming more difficult to manage. I also wonder if it was obvious he was asking for this specific child (using her full name or unusual name) or just asking if Elsa was there (assuming there would be a child of that name there). I think that makes a difference to whether it is targeted or just odd and random.

I would also hope though that a home daycare would have cctv to record anyone going in and out (a Ring doorbell at least). Obviously they have a good sketch of him, but is that from an image or from memory.

Scary stuff though, my mom actually pulled me out of daycare in the 80s because she turned up the first week and just walked in, walked into the baby room, picked me up and walked out without anyone questioning what she was doing. Obviously we’d hope that wouldn’t happen, but it does make you realise it just takes one mistake for something bad to happen. Glad they did the right things here.
