Snipped from MistyWaters link....
...RCMP members on the scene said there are several detainees at the Cochrane RCMP detachment but have not said whether they are in connection to this incident.

...RCMP said this is an extremely complex and dynamic investigation. Further updates will be provided when available.

FWIW.

Well this is really disheartening and no further information from police. Is the investigation back to square one? It’s the sort of disturbing situation one might expect to read involving an unfortunate tourist on some backroad in Mexico, certainly not regarding a tourist embarking on an innocent visit to the Rocky Mountains in Canada.

German tourist shot near Calgary shows signs of severe, life-changing injuries | CBC News

“..After nearly two weeks in hospital, the victim is not able to talk or move the right side of his body, Liebrecht said. Doctors were not able to remove the bullet, fearing it would cause further damage to his brain.

Liebrecht said the man is on his way back to Germany on a specialized aircraft. He will be treated in a German hospital that specializes in brain injuries.

"His wife, having left Canada as well, wants to express her sincere gratitude to all who helped the family so impressively in so many different ways," the statement read. "Now a very long road to recovery will begin with an unknown outcome."...”

16 years old? Oh my goodness, if he’s guilty whatever would possess him to pass a vehicle, then intentionally shoot at the driver? There’s been other instances of bored youths chucking rocks at unsuspecting people in vehicles as they pass through quasi-isolated roads, but shooting at people....what, just for fun?

If this is what occurred I sure hope he’s tried in adult court and this crime is treated seriously otherwise I fear this is merely a glimpse into his violent future. And I also sincerely hope it was someone within his family or the Morley community who did the right thing by reporting him because if so, for that they should be commended.

“After shooting a German tourist in the head in what might have been a case of mistaken identity, the 16-year-old shooter yelled "we caught a body," one witness said during his testimony at the boy's trial in Calgary.....

.......The Crown's first witness was a young woman who lives in the Morley, Alta., First Nations settlement, about 60 kilometres west of Calgary. She said she was in the car on Aug. 2, 2018, when the teen shot the tourist.

CBC News is calling witness L, because of the risk naming her could identify the accused.

Based on cross-examination questions from defence lawyer Balfour Der, the driver of the car carrying young people from the Morley community believed the person in the black SUV was a man who had attacked his brother...”

No comment on the 21 months except to say the German family must be devastated. But reportedly the accused had breached his bail conditions and was re-arrested, which would’ve resulted in time served. In using this time served to eliminate any additional jail time IMO resembles a reward of bad behaviour.

“It's been nearly two years since Horst Stewin suffered life-altering injuries causing him to become an "aggressive and violent" man after being shot in the head as he and his family — visiting from Germany — drove along a highway west of Calgary.

The teen who pulled the trigger was handed a 21-month sentence Thursday by provincial court Judge George Gaschler. With the time he's already served, he will be released from custody right away.

"You need the support of your family," Gaschler said to the now-18-year-old from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, who cannot be identified as he was only 16 years old at the time of the shooting, in August 2018.

"I encourage you to work together with an elder. I hope you are successful."

Alberta teen who shot, paralyzed German tourist is on house arrest after serving 15 months of sentence | National Post
The life of Horst Stewin have changed dramatically due to brain injuries, just because the car he happened to drive was mistaken to belong to a man who had beaten up someone's brother.
