Maier was last seen leaving the Prelate Hotel at 1:00 a.m on May 4, 1973. He was headed to his home located 20 kilometres away in the Liebenthal district but never arrived. At the time of his disappearance, he was driving a 1971 Chevrolet half-ton, red with white half camper box, SK license F133013. Despite extensive searches conducted, neither Maier nor his vehicle have ever been located.
