''Quebec police ask for help in search for missing Gloucester man

The man was last seen at about 8 p.m. in Ladysmith, Que., and was thought to be travelling to the Otter Lake area in a black 2017 Ford Escape.''

His relatives had reason to be concerned about his safety, police said. He was described as 5-11, 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. When last seen, he was wearing blue jeans, a red jersey and a red Raptors cap.

Anyone who has seen Scandiffio was asked to contact 911. Police said any information that can help find him can be communicated, confidentially, to the criminal information centre of the Sûreté du Québec at 1-800-659-4264.''

Officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and the MRC de Pontiac went door-to-door in the Ladysmith and Otter Lake areas as part of the investigation and the SQ helicopter flew over the area Tuesday. Police say several investigative steps have been taken and are continuing, in particular verifying images taken by surveillance cameras.

“We are asking for the public's cooperation in locating Mr. Scandiffio. During this fall period, we are asking hunters and hikers who will be present in isolated and wooded areas to pay particular attention to their environment,” the SQ said in French in a news release Wednesday.

It’s been more than 10 days since 57-year-old Michael Scandiffio went missing in the Pontiac region.

“We’re hoping and praying we see him very soon,” said his cousin, Susan Scandiffio. “Mike went missing on October 1st. He was at Oktoberfest with his wife and friends in Lady Smith.”

She says the Gloucester resident was heading north on highway 303 toward the Otter Lake area in a black 2017 Ford Escape.

“He was bringing food to his teenage son and friend to their cottage and unfortunately didn’t arrive,” she said. “In the ten minutes between Ladysmith and Otter Lake, he disappeared.”

For more than a week, officers from the Sûreté du Québec and the MRC des Pontiac have searched the area, going door-to-door. Officials and residents have been searching the woods as well. So far, they have no leads and say his vehicle has not been found.

“We want that search to keep going until he is found,” said Scandiffio. “He’s so deeply in love with his family and his sons and we know he would do anything at all to get back to them.”

I'm wondering if his vehicle left the highway and went into a body of water along the 303.

I see some areas around Lac Johnson , and a body of water across from Lac Rueckwald, or maybe even Ile Honeymoon where he could have gone in.

I hope they find him soon.

MOO, just speculation.

Michael is still missing. :(

I'm sorry to hear Michael is still missing. I hope he is found soon. My best guess is that his vehicle either entered the water, or his vehicle left the road and is out of view of the searches so far. MOO

Does anyone know what time he left to go to Otter Lake? I was looking at the schedule for the Ladysmith Oktoberfest. It ran from 5 pm Friday, September 30th to noon on Sunday, October 2nd even though the event schedule shows the festival running only 2 days. On October 2nd only the craft booths and breakfast were still operating until noon.

So on October 1st he could have left any time between 9 am and 1 am after everything closed which technically would have been October 2.

ETA for some reason the link to the festival isn't working to add as a link.

Thank you. I must have skimmed over that detail. So it was already dark when he left for the cottage. I would like a bit of clarification regarding the cottage. In the news item it states he was heading to their cottage at Otter Lake. Is it their cottage, as in they own the cottage, or was it a cottage they had rented? Because it increases a lot of options as to what route he took.

Otter Lake is a municipality in the province of Quebec. It embraces quite a large area as well as several population centres, including the village of Otter Lake. The village is surrounded by three lakes, Hughes Lake to the west, Farm Lake to the east, and Otter Lake to the North.

I live in cottage country in Ontario north of Toronto. Locals know about roads that can avoid weekend traffic so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same in Quebec. Because we don't really know the exact location of the cottage, it is possible that MS did not take the 303 to Otter Lake?

Another thing I'll mention is that Oktoberfest celebrates German culture and that includes beer. I don't know if anyone has mentioned whether MS was drinking at the festival but the probability is not low. These kinds of events attract a police presence waiting along the highway to pull over drivers to check for impairment. Without knowing the particulars I would not preclude this situation. If that is the case, it is quite possible that people familiar with the area will take back roads to avoid RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks.

If I were the QPP I'd be checking alternate routs from Ladysmith to Otter Lake village (even though we have no idea if that is the exact location he was heading). I just spent about an hour Googling along Hwy 303 from Ladysmith to Otter Lake. The road is typical of that area; lots of rock face, a mix of hardwood trees and spruce and pine. There are turns in the road but nothing that gets you thinking of someone flying off the road. There's plenty of water but most of it close to the road has metal barriers that would show evidence of a car careening into the water. Plus a lot of home are built very close to the road and the water so I think locals would probably go out and check to see if there is any evidence of a vehicle going into the water. I think there would be more chance of a vehicle going into the areas where trees are and even then, most trees close to the roads are young saplings that would show evidence of an accident.

If Stephen's Rd and Johnson Rd are on Google, I think I'll take a little 'drive up' them.
