''At least half a dozen times a day, Toronto cops put out a missing person notice.
Typically, they are found within hours.

But sometimes they’re not.

In the wake of the Bruce MacArthur serial killer investigation, Toronto Police have rebooted its missing persons unit, dormant since the early 1990s. The unit now falls under the homicide umbrella.

In yellowing files, there are hundreds of men, women and children who simply vanished.

“These are all people that have disappeared without a trace,” Det.-Sgt. Steve Smith told the Toronto Sun. “There are many reasons why people go missing, but it is rare that they are never heard from again.”

The head of the cold case and missing persons unit said cops need the public’s help in finding answers.

“Any tip is vital no matter how insignificant you might think it is,” Smith said, adding his unit is “actively investigating all of these historical cases.

“We won’t rest until t there is closure to all our outstanding cases. These missing persons and their families deserve no less.”

MO NA HU

WHEN:
July 15, 2021

411: Hu’s sister had not heard from her for several months when she contacted police. Officers discovered that Hu, 42, had left the home three years before without a forwarding address. Instead, detectives learned Hu took short-term rentals, the last one a condo on the waterfront. She told one person she planned to travel home. There is no evidence she left the country.
