Central Saanich police search for 'high-risk' missing man as friends raise money to hire helicopter

CTV News Vancouver Island

Police in Central Saanich, B.C., are searching for a high-risk missing man who hasn't been seen since Friday.
Nathaniel Watters, 41, was last seen around 4:30 a.m. Friday in the Keating area of Central Saanich, according to police.

Investigators are asking the public to help find the missing person.

Friends of Watters started an online fundraiser to help with their search. By Monday, the GoFundMe campaign had already surpassed its goal of raising $12,000 to hire a helicopter to search for the man.

"His last known location is north of Fairy Lake on a forest service road in Port Renfrew," says fundraising organizer Jennifer Hoffman in a statement on the GoFundMe site.

"There has been a lot of area searched, but with the logging roads it would be best to get a search from above," she added. "They are also looking for searchers to help that have 4x4, dirt bikes, etc. Meeting place is Port Renfrew fire hall. Please help if you can."

Watters is described as a white man standing five feet, 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 225 pounds.
He is believed to be driving a grey 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck with B.C. licence plate PJ7371.

Anyone with information on the location of Watters or his truck is asked to call 911 or the Central Saanich Police Service at 250-652-4441.

This disappearance bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the Ben Kilmer disappearance - a man of the same age on Vancouver Island a few years ago. I sincerely hope the outcome is not the same, and Nathaniel is found safe. He's deemed as high-risk at this time. At this time I don't believe they have found his vehicle as they had with Ben's.

I note they say he was last seen at 4:30 AM in the Keating area of Central Saanich, but his friends state on the GoFundMe that his last known location is north of Fairy Lake in Port Renfrew. I'm assuming by that, they mean based off phone location?

Can't be certain, but if he was coming from the Victoria area and heading to Port Renfrew/Fairy Lake, he likely would have taken the 14 as opposed to driving up the Malahat and through Cowichan. They're frankly about the same time - 2 hours ish give or take, and both rugged old logging roads from my memory (with the exception of taking the main highway to Duncan then going out to Lake Cowichan).

He is described as being a white male, standing 5’ 10” tall and weighing about 225 lbs. Watters is believed to be driving a grey, 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck, BC plate PJ7371.

“Search efforts for the 41-year-old to date have focused on Port Renfrew, as several of his belongings were found north of Fairy Lake this week. Watters said he and his brother used to spend time in Port Renfrew together.

“He also mentioned to his wife the night before that he had to do some work out in the Port Renfrew area,” he told Global News. “He left notes of farewell, which is why we’re concerned for self-harm in this situation.”

Watters said his Nathaniel is deeply loved and has a “plethora of people,” including family and friends, who want to support him through whatever he’s experiencing.”
