DECADE OF SILENCE: Who killed Oliver Martin and Dylan Ellis…and why?

It was a mild evening on the cusp of summer a decade ago when a group of childhood friends gathered at a condo in the city’s Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood to watch the NBA playoff finals — unaware it would be the last time they’d all be together.

They shared some laughs as eventual champions the Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of the series.

Nobody could have predicted that two of them, Dylan Ellis, 26, and Oliver Martin, 25, would soon be dead — gunned down in the wee hours of Friday the 13th, June 2008, by a stone cold killer with an itchy trigger finger who has never been identified.

The way the killer shot from the side then went to the front to shoot toward the front passenger seat makes this almost certainly a set-up and direct hit. If it was a fit of rage he probably would just have just blindly through the side at both of them. Also was the person who called the two back because they had his keys given bad drugs the night he died 5 years to the day of a murders of a drug overdose in his mom's house? In other words was there any chance it was a murder as well? Would they have tested those drugs?

The motive isn't clear. The reason it is so hard to solve is because I think the two men were murdered to get back at someone else not them.

''Did last week’s murders of Dylan Ellis and Oliver Martin have anything to do with their social status?

Toronto Police are reportedly probing that possibility and others as they look for a suspect in the case. In a published report, the case’s lead homicide investigator Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux mused that the gunman may have taken offense to the two well-off 25-year-olds being in his neighbourhood.

It’s believed the suspect was familiar with the Richmond and Niagara Sts.-area – he was believed to be either on foot or on bike when the double shooting occurred.''
