''One of the last times anyone heard from Shalini Singh is when she called her mother on Dec. 4.

Anita Singh spoke to CBC Hamilton from her Burlington, Ont., home on Tuesday afternoon, tears streaming down her face, her husband and Shalini's father, Dalip, sitting next to her. The family was interviewed as a police search in a landfill continued.

"She just kept saying, 'I love you, mom, I love you mom, I love you, mom.' And I said, 'What's the matter with you, Shalini? Are you all right?'" Anita said. "And she hung up all of a sudden."
''The boyfriend is not co-operating with the investigation, but Reid wouldn't say if he's a suspect or person of interest. Police are also not releasing his name at this time.
"All I can say is we're just looking into his possible involvement," Reid said.''

"There is no video that we have located at this time that shows Shalini leaving her building after Dec. 4," he said. "We are investigating the possibility that Shalini was killed in her apartment and removed from the building through the building's garbage disposal system."

''Investigators believe Singh may have been killed inside her apartment and that her remains were disposed of through the building’s garbage system.

Early in the investigation, police say they searched the Kenora Waste Transfer Station, but nothing was found. Detectives later determined that most of the garbage from the apartment had already been moved to the Glanbrook Landfill.''

Partial human remains have been found in a months-long search of a Hamilton landfill as police investigate the disappearance of a woman who was last heard from in December.

Hamilton police said Thursday they are now waiting on DNA test results to confirm an identity.

Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid said investigators believe Shalini Singh was killed in her apartment and her body was removed through the building’s garbage system.

''The Hamilton Police Service says the common-law boyfriend of a Hamilton woman whose remains were found at a landfill site has been charged with her death.''

''There were concerns over the circumstances of Singh’s disappearance at the time, as she was reported missing by her parents along with her common-law boyfriend. The boyfriend was located when he visited his family’s home on the afternoon of Dec. 11, 2024, in Halton Region.''

''Police said the search at the landfill site is ongoing and will continue until June 27.''
''Based on these DNA results and the evidence located during this investigation, 42-year-old Jeffery Smith of Burlington was arrested without incident on June 20th. Jeffery Smith was the common-law partner of Shalini Singh at the time of her death, and he has now been charged with Second Degree Murder and Indignity to Human Remains. Jeffery had his first appearance in court on Saturday June 21st.''
