ACFN asks people for help finding missing woman after more than 100 volunteers join weekend search | Fort Mcmurray Today
''The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) is asking people to help find Sherri Lynn Flett, an ACFN member who was last seen in downtown Fort McMurray on Jan. 12 and reported missing four days later.
Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) organized a search party that took place on Saturday and Sunday. Close to 100 volunteers look in downtown Fort McMurray, the forest, ditches and alleys but sparked no new leads.''
'Flett is one of nine women, girls and two-spirit people reported missing or murdered (MMIWG2S+) in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo area since 2004. The most recent confirmed death was Ellie Herman, a member of the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation who was last seen in September 2019. Herman’s remains were found last year on March 20 near a trail by the Rotary Club Gazebo at Thicket Drive and Silin Forest Road.''
''ACFN Chief Allan Adam choked up when speaking about the impacts MMIWG2S+ has on Indigenous peoples and their communities.
“It’s tough to see this kind of thing happen and I can’t believe that this still continues,” said Adam. “If someone went missing that wasn’t Aboriginal for 12 days, you think the media wouldn’t know about it? How many days ago would this have been out in the public?”

''Mounties in Fort McMurray are asking the public’s help in locating a 43-year-old woman who has been missing for more than a week.
RCMP say Sherri Lynn Flett was last seen on Jan 12, 2022, in the downtown area of Fort McMurray. She was reported missing on Jan 16 and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
On Sunday, police said the RCMP major crimes unit had been called in to help with the investigation.
Flett is a Fort McMurray resident and police say it is out of character for her to not be in regular contact with her family and friends.
Police describe her as being five foot six inches tall and weighing 119 pounds. She has black hair with brown eyes.
Anyone who has been in contact with her or has information about her whereabouts is asked to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4040.''
