MacLaren was last seen at the Capital Trail Crew Camp in Kananaskis, Alberta at the end of June 1981. He was reported missing on July 11, 1981, when he failed to show up for work. Prior to his disappearance, MacLaren had planned on going hiking in Kananaskis Provincial Park. His whereabouts remain unknown.
