A body was found inside a large, blue wheeled recycling bin that was floating off Kits Point in Vancouver on Sunday. Canadian Coast Guard received several calls from boaters around 11 a.m. on Sunday about a large, wheeled recycling bin in the water.

Police are now asking property managers to keep an eye out for missing wheelie bins.

Body in bin: Police return to Kits Point as they search for clues in Vancouver's latest homicide

An employee at False Creek Ferries told CTV News on Tuesday that one of its captains had spotted the bin Sunday and tried to remove it from the water as they often do with trash and debris on their routes.

But when the captain realized it was too heavy to pull on board, she called the coast guard, not realizing what was inside.

The top of the bin was reportedly closed with a bungee cord.

How awful! I guess whoever did this assumed the bin would stay sunken forever! Hope justice is swiftly served.

Body in bin: Police return to Kits Point as they search for clues in Vancouver's latest homicide

People living in boats of Kits Point said police have been in the area since the discovery.

They said at one point officers were going going from boat to boat asking about the recycling bin. One man who spoke to police said it appeared police were trying to determine which direction the bin may have floated in from.

Vancouver police are also appealing to property owners to report any tall blue recycling containers that may have gone missing, as they try to determine where the bin may have come from. They have not said what markings, if any, the blue bin has.

Police also want to speak with anyone who may have seen the bin floating in the water on Sunday.

It appears police officers are keeping a close eye on the area. A CTV News photographer was approached by police and asked what he was doing in the area after parking his unmarked truck in a public lot near the Vancouver Maritime Museum around 5:30 a.m.

About half a dozen officers appeared to be searching through grass and along the beach late Tuesday morning.

Police have not said if they believe there is any danger to the public.

Identified!!! Assuming this is still considered an active homicide?

Body in recycling bin: Victim identified by police 10 days later

"VANCOUVER -- Police have identified the victim of a homicide 10 days after human remains were found in a recycling bin in Vancouver.

The remains found in a large blue bin floating off Kits Point have been identified as those of Douglas Wanke.

A friend tells CTV News Wanke had worked in room service at the Pinnacle Hotel in Coal Harbour for about 30 years. "

Poor guy.

Also very disturbing. The police were probably going from boat to boat also looking for evidence since the bin was found floating in water. Would make sense if a boat were involved because how else could the bin get into the water?

It's been 6 months. I'm assuming LE are working on something because it doesn't seem like there's been any kind of "mass appeal to public" or press conference.

" A friend tells CTV News Wanke had worked in room service at the Pinnacle Hotel in Coal Harbour for about 30 years.

The 57-year-old, who went by "Doug," was originally from Winnipeg, and had an apartment in Vancouver's West End.

The friend told CTV he was concerned a couple weeks ago because he hadn't heard from Wanke in a few days. That was around the time the body was discovered.

Wanke's remains were found on Oct. 18, after several people called officials to report the floating object. "

Vancouver police identify murder victim whose remains were found floating in a recycling bin - Richmond News
"The VPD’s major crime section is continuing to investigate Mr. Wanke’s murder," said Cst. Tania Visintin, of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

Initially, police and BC Coroner's Service members accompanied coast guard crews shortly after 11 a.m. Oct. 18 to examine the discovered remains. "

Just for reference: It's a 10 minute drive from the Pinnacle Hotel to Kits Point/Kitsilano area according to Google. *Not that I'm saying anyone drove from the hotel to the beach, just pointing out how close the 2 locations are* Kits Point is basically south-west of downtown Vancouver & the "West End" where DW worked and lived.
