On May 18, 1975, members of the Canadian Armed Forces located the personal belongings of William Bereziuk washed up on an island in the Athabasca River 50 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. In October 1974, William departed Edmonton with the objective of embarking on a canoe trip along the Athabasca River. He informed his family that he had plans to spend the winter of 1974 in the Birch Mountain area of Alberta and would return to Edmonton in August of 1975.
