Circumstances of Disappearance:
Dailey, an American citizen, left his home in New York State and traveled to Alaska with two friends in June 1980. He was last seen in the village of Haines Junction in the Yukon on the return trip from Alaska in July 1980. At the time of his disappearance, the trio had been traveling in a 1972 Dodge dark blue flatbed pick-up truck with black racks. His whereabouts remain unknown.

These type of cases should have more info, even in a basic investigation.

Is it assumed that his traveling companions/friends and the flat bed truck are not missing?
Were his friends also from the state of New York?
Were his friends the ones to report William missing? Assuming so or else who would have known he was traveling with two other people?
If he was traveling with friends, wouldn't they have more details on his last known whereabouts?
Who was he last seen by in Haines Junction? His friends, or a random eye witness? (gas station attendant, restaurant workers etc.)
If his friends saw him there last, did he just walk away? Did they leave him there? Did he continue on the trek home hitchhiking and disappeared somewhere along the way?
Were his friends ever considered suspects or having involvement in William's disappearance?
